Fuel tank level is giving a wrong reading

On a 2000 sunfire the fuel guage is reading empty when it has a 25L in the tank. the dash light for low fuel comes on and stays but some times the light will go out but the guage still reads empty. the fuel pump is operating as it should. is it possable that the float can get stuck?

My gas light is on, took off gas cap & put back on but light still on. Any suggestins?

I suggest you read the vehicle owner's handbook to be certain what the exact function of the light is. You will need to know that in order to determine whether the light is warning you or is broken.

The fuel light usually warns the fuel level in the tank is low...

FUEL GAUGE READS FULL WHEN EMPTY AND EMPTY WHEN FULL

Did this get replaced recently?
Fuel level senders typically work by changing the resistance (and therefore current) depending on the fuel level determined by the position of the float mechanism in the tank. Since the guage you are describing is working exactly opposit to as intended, is it possible that an incorrect sender was installed, or, if there are 2 terminals on the guage, have the wires been switched so that the current is going through the wrong way?

Fuel guage sometimes read empty when there is gas in the tank?

Check that there are no holes in the float. If the fuel is getting into the float, it will give a false reading. Another thing is to check the ground on the float sensor. If it's not connected tightly, it will create a false reading too.

2009 ford escape read empty after refueling to full tank

Sounds like it's the fuel level sensor in the tank that measures that for the dashboard. It's either that or it's a different issue. Could even be a fuse or relay that's bad. Check your fuses first, just in case.

Fuel guage reading was erratic. Replaced fuel pump and sensor..fuel guage then read a constant 1/4 tank lower than it actually was. Mechanic checked and said it was wired wrong...fuel guage then read...

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You may have a bad sending unit. It could also be a defective dash voltage regulator, lost ground at sending unit, break in the wire at the dash harness too. It can be anyone of these to be honest.

The fuel gauge is'nt working.I tryed to ground it

When testing a fuel guage you should disconnect the wires to it,guage should read over full, ground the float wire, turn off key then turn back on should read empty. You have to cycle the key for guage to move.If still inop the wire is broken in the harness between the tank and the dash.Voltage on the float wire is low. When tested with a test light it will barely light the light and pulsate. This test indicates the wiring is good.

Low fuel light On

The problem is with the fuel level sensor, it's attached with the fuel pump and located inside the fuel tank, sometimes the water and other impurities inside the fuel causes this problem, solution is to get the fuel pump opened by a professional and the problem might be solved by some simple cleanup. Hope it helps and comment if you need more advice. Please don't forget to rate the answer, it helps me, thanks!

Fuel gauge showing empty

open circuit in the fuel level sensor. mounted in tank. as the fuel level in the tank starts to drop the arm will move past the dead spot on the sensor and the gauge will start reading again.i dont recommend diy replacement of the fuel level sender.

98 limited edition fuel gage is not coming anymore low. when switched off it comes to 3/4 level only and goes back to full when swithed on.

The easiest way to test this at home is to find the 4 wire connector back at the fuel tank. (Find the violet/white wire and the orange/yellow.) Unplug the connector and attach a resistor between these wires, turn the key on and check. You will need a 145 ohm resistor for full and 22 ohm resistor for empty.Doing this checks the guage, wires and slosh module in the dash.If the gauge reads correctly, your problem is in the tank. You can pick the resistors up at Radio Shack or any electronics store. Or you can try and rent a guage tester from your local parts house. Good Luck, let me know if you need anything else.
