Best method is to buy a pair of c-clip pliers which are designed for that purpose. Maybe Pep Boys or similar?

On my 2004 mercury mountaineer if anyone knows what size socket fits the rear axle nut let me know I have been told a 36 mm but it seems like it's a little too big for the nut

36mm is the consensus of opinion, but in reality, it is the socket that 'FITS'! Most socket sets come in metric and imperial, you use that one that is the best fit.

How do you remove rear axle from 1995 ford ranger 2 wheel drive need to replace oil seal

Raise the vehicle and properly support it. Remove the wheel and drum. Remove the rear diff cover, have a drain pan underneath to catch the gear oil. Place the trans in nuetral, chalk the front wheels to keep vehicle from moving if you forget to put it back into park befor you lower the vehicle. Rotat the differential until you see the bolt that holds the diff pin in place. Remove the bolt, 5/16 or 8 mm I believe. You can then remove the diff pin, do not rotate the diff with the diff pin removed! Push the axle in, you can then remove the C-clip that holds the axle to the side gear, it will usuall drop or just fall out. Pull the axle out of the rear diff and replace the seal. Put everything back together. Use black or grey RTV to reseal the diff cover making sure o clean up both surfaces as best you can. Put trans in park. Lower the vehicle. Remove the fill plug from the side of the differential and fill with gear lube until lube comes out the hole. Reinstall the plug and your good to go. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

How too remove rear axel horsehoe clips too remove axel?

In order to remove the axle, you need to go in through the rear pumpkin. Take the back plate off the rear pumpkin, then you will see where your axle comes in through the sides. Go back to the outer end of the axle, (where the tire goes) and push inward on the axle. It shouls move in about 1/2" or so, just enough to remove the clip. The clip should fall out easily if it is turned in the 'down' position. Then you will need to remove the pins that run through the axles themselvs, and the axles should pull right out to the sides.

Rear axle seal is leaking on 04 heritage model, does this rear end have same c-clip to remove axle as older models?

Should be same, just don't forget differential bolt and pin removal first to allow you to push axle in to remove "C" clip.

How do you remove c-clips on axle of 95 ford rear end?

If you have already removed the outer axle bearing cover in the rear hub, try popping the axle out as some of them have a compression clip holding it in place in the differential. If it doesn't pop loose, you wil have to remove the differential cover and push the axle inward enough to access the retaining clip to remove it. It should slide out fairly easile once the axle is pushed in far enough to clear the retainer clip lock collar.
