My 2003 dodge neon sprays the transmission fluid all over the front of the engine block almost as if it was coming from the radiator fan. How do i find the leak?

That can be a few different things , The most obvious is dirty or old transmission fluid , transmission fluid needs to be flushed every two years in an Automatic , Autos 80% of trans failure occurs from people not servicing transmissions , i use fully synthetic fluids as it exceeds OEM , i do proper flush in my back yard nut a drain and fill , old fluid you can also get vibrations through steering wheel , engine will cut out while idling at lights from old fluid , bet you you have not serviced transmission

Usually a scanner to read the engine fault code could lead to the correct diagnosis and repair. But if this transmission was recently repaired bring it back and tell them to do their job.

This is the best way to proceed. You can only hope that nothing was damaged in the transmission. The only way to tell is to drive it and see, unless you want to take it to a transmission shop and let them tear it open and have a look. It's quite possible that you did no damage to the transmission, just had the wrong fliud to keep pressures where they need to be for driving. No one can tell you for sure what will happen next, keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best. I would probably do at least 2 fluishes to make sure nothing got left behind and while you at it change the filter.

if you are leakiung transmission fluid and coolant you most likley have a crack in the radiator, the radiator also houses the transmission cooler so when it goes bad it can also leak transmission fluid

standing in front facing your engine it's located below the intake between the radiator and engine block. you will need to remove battery, battery tray, and coolong fans on radiator, and radiator hose to gain acess.

What is the mileage? Check the reservoir for coolant, when the engine is COLD,... I repeat COLD, check the radiator for fluid. If fluid is present, check to see if your fans are working properly, turn your AC on and your fans in front of your motor should kick in within minutes.

If you have coolant in the reservoir and radiator (suspect a new thermostat, replacing the radiator will benefit greatly too)

If your fans do not turn on within minutes, replace your radiator fan relay.

if you have trany fluid in the radator than you need to replace tthe radator, and have the coolant system flushed. and make sure there is no coolant in the transmission that would be bad, i would get this done asap. good luck

Ok well there are two issues here the boiling and the potential for the transmission to be harmed by the contamination of the tranny fluid by antifreeze. First A/T fluid is not going to harm the coolant system in the least, however antifreeze in the trans. fluid will harm the automatic transmission get the tranny flushed as soon as possible , Change out the thermostat then refill radiator using 50% water 50 % antifreeze ( premixed in container) fill radiator then run the car without radiator cap add coolant as needed, put you radiator cap on and wait 5 - 10 minutes until car comes up to operatimg temp. you must observe the engine to make sure the electric radiator fan comes on after the car runs for at least ten minutes if it does not the problem is the usually the radiator fan relay or the fan coolant temperature sensor last in rare cases the fan itself. As for the air bleed usually letting the car run with the radiator cap off for ten to fifteen minutes will do it just make sure you don't remove the radiator cap when the car is hot 2nd degree burns usually hurt.

As detrimental as coolant is in the engine oil, it has a much worse affect in the transmission fluid as its a thinner fluid and does not have the additive package that a motor oil does.

Here's how I would approach this:

To replace the cooler (its probably in the radiator) means they will likely have to replace the radiator and then the rebuild of the transmission is going to be up there as well. So all this is going to be considerably expensive.

You could go that route if you wish, but you could also take a chance and have an after market transmission cooler installed (by-pass the one in the radiator completely so you dont have the risk of coolant in your transmission again) and then have a thorough transmission flush done with a new filter installed.

Now, you are likely looking at a few hundred dollars minimum if you have the dealership do this but Im thinking that the reason the car acted like it was in neutral was due to the lack of transmission fluid because of the cooler line busting.

If you can do this work yourself you could probably do it all for less than $200 and if everything works out and the transmission is not damaged and works properly, you've saved yourself a good chunk of change. If it doesnt work and continues to have problems, then you can decide if the repair bill will be worth it to rebuild the transmission.

The key think here will be doing a very thorough transmission flush to get any traces of coolant out of the system and a new filter. Hope this helps.
