First, make sure you can turn the engine by hand. If you can't then the starter can't turn it either. Have someone else turn the key and look for the source of the click...may be a relay. Go over the starting circuit with a volt meter. Check for power at the starter main terminal and then with the key turned to "start" check for power at the trigger terminal on the starter. Check battery voltage and check relay operation.
You have a neutral safety switch on the transmission if its an automatic and a clutch switch if it's a stick. Check them as well. Make sure battery grounding on fender and block are also clean and secure.

Had the same problem. Turn key, but nothing happens. Turns out the 30amp fuse under bonnet ( hood) had blown. Started no problems when push started. Replaced fuse, and was o.k for a while, but blew fuse again a few weeks later. Once again replaced the fuse, and all starts o.k. I suspect a faulty solenoid/ worn starter motor brushes, which I will check next service.

I have the same issue -- 2006 Wrangler. Engine light comes on when I turn the key without starting the engine. Radio, lights, AC all work. Engine light blinks 9 times. Try to start and hear nothing...won't start. Turn key off and back on a few times and it finally starts. Took to autozone to run a check and comes out clean....no issues. Said it maybe an EMF or ECS or something like that. I don't want to spend $$$$$ to take it to Jeep.

Where is the neutral safety switch located on my 2008 Jeep wrangler?

Sounds like you're starting at the expensive end and working backwards! First, check your battery, make sure it has a good charge. Second step is the starter solenoid. Some designs have external solenoids, some are internal. Third is the starter itself. Once you are sure all that stuff is good, THEN it's time to start looking for the neutral safety switch.

The check engine light is meaningless when the engine is not running.

2006 Ford taurus won't start, starter, altlernator, battery replaced, ignition starter switch, neutral safely switch changed, still nothing

I looked at info for your security system, it is starter motor disable. I didn't see 06 ford Taurus in my database, so I looked at 05.
Battery has a full charge and battery connections all good?
We can usually do some tests to see if starter motor will crank the engine, but, if the security is the problem, it still won't start.
You can check for applicable trouble codes? Try a different key?

1989 Jeep Wrangler no power when key is in on position

Honestly, it sounds like a bad ignition coil. When they get corroded inside they will draw power on a scale much higher than anything else on the vehicle. It is a coil and it's job is to take a little power and make a lot of it. If it's only when the key is in the "run" position, that is likely the case. The only real difference between the two positions is that in the run position there is power being delivered to the ignition system. Good luck.
