You have electronic issues. You need an auto electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer to read the codes and diagnose the issues. It is OBD1 but you should still get data from the engine light and brake light..

My car problem started 3 days ago, it started with my Toyota security light blinking red, then a key like symbol on ...
switch needs to be replace. the ignition key works starts failing just like the starter itself it starts ok at first and starts to go every time you try to start your car until it goes no more. replace as soon as possible or you will end up calling a locksmith.
Transmission park switch located on top of the transmission is out of range,OR bad....Had a winstar mini van that did that..also would switch from over drive to drive from time to time went going up the hyway ..replaced the switch on top of the trannie connected to the shifter..problem went away
sounds like a broken timing belt, timing belts like to break during engine cranking and engine shut down. there are inspection holes in the timing cover,if you can't determine, remove top half of timing cover and check belt for slap,if there's slap,it's broke.
I have the same car but don't have that problem with this one however, I did with the 99 I traded for this one. I figured out that if the wheels were not left straight, any degree of angle facing either direction, would freeze something in the steering column and not allow it to start. Had it towed twice before the tech said he had the same problem in the past. Never happened after that. The prob I had with the 2004 Taurus, bought a cheap battery from wal-mart and it ran everything but my car, tech said it's probably the reason the alternator had failed. Check your brand of battery. My battery light stayed on for two months, started fine, switched the battery from the wal-mart one, light went off instantly.
Sounds like you need an ignition switch. It's the electrical part on the back of the key and tumble assembly. If you can get it to not start check the starter wire off the back of the ignition switch for 12 volts while in the start position. It should have 12 volts . If not the switch is bad. I would have all that ( add on )Stuff taken off ASAP. That will not make things any easier to diagnos or repair. The switch is a fairly cheap item and is not to hard to change.I would get a switch and take off all the add on's and go from there. Electric gremlins are frustraiting when they won't act up all the time. Good luck and let me know....Dan PS> the 99 made noise when they went to start it. that click was the solinoid engaging. That car had a bad starter. You say yours does nothing, not the same symptom....Dan
