Wether it's worth the cost of repair is something only you can decide, what is the mileage and condition of vehicle ? have you had the OBD codes read to see if there is a code to help with diagnosing the problem ?

BMW's from 82' to 2001 should have a 20 pin connector under the hood. Unscrew the lid and find pins 7 and 19. Short these pins together and turn the key to run, not start. Within 5 to 10 seconds the sensor will reset. Leave the key on, and remove the short. Don't leave them shorted too long, as this will reset the maintenance interal.

Try putting the in in on position and depress accelerator pedal to floor for ree seconds three times. that should put it in learning mode however sounds more like TCM or tranny valve body.

BMW 320TDI HARD TO START WHEN WARM

I had the same problem on my 330d M-Sport Touring. My problem was identified as 2 faulty injectors al;lowing too much fuel to flow back into the fuel lines. This resulted in reduced common rail pressure and the ECU would not start the injectors. I recommend getting a leak back test done and this will confirm if the injectors are good or bad. Try and find a Bosch service centre as these guys will know how to do the test and also how to fit the injectors properly.
Good luck

Gear oil level

There is no way to see the level in the gear box. There should be a small plug somewhere on the top the the gear box. You will need a very small funnel to put in. If the gears are crunching or grinding then try putting a little in. Just stanard auto gear oil will do.
