How can i change the transmission fluid - 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis

Raise vehicle and secure it safely as you will be working under it.remove all but 4 bolts closest to the front or back of the car,depending if you raise the car from the front or rear[just loosen these bolts,this will allow you to control the flow of trans fluid without making a big mess]be sure to have a large pan that can hold at least 7 quarts of trans fluid with a diameter larger than the trans pan,again to minimize mess, once all the fluid is done draining remove the rest of the bolts remove trans filter,remove old gasket from pan, install new filter,install new gasket on pan[put a thin layer of gasket adhesive on gasket area to help hold gasket in place],when installing pan bolts use a tightening pattern start from the center of ether side of the pan and tighten evenly all the way around.DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN if the gasket starts to push out between pan and case its to tight it will leak.once you have finished, lower the car,be sure its level and on the ground,remove dipstick, put in a funnel add 3 quarts of atf, start the engine,check for leaks then move selector prd321 123drp check fluid level add as needed.DO NOT OVER FILL 2 more quarts should top it off for a total of 5 quarts. you will need for this task,transmission kit[filter&gasket] 6quarts atf 8mm,13mm,10mm sockets & ratchet a suitable jacket and a good means to support the car,and a large pan. this is quite easy to do if your willing to get your hands a little oily.[dish soap cleans up hands well]2 more things your transmission is an EAOD [electronic automatic overdrive]your trans kit may have a little brown piece of paper in it ,throw it away. its in the box to absorb moisture while the kits on the shelf.hope this helps you.

If there is a drain plug on the sump pan you may have to remove it all together you will need a new gasket whe replacing its going to be a bit messy. using a funel in the dip stick tube refill with fresh fluid

You can jack the car up and pull out all the screws holding the silver pan on the bottom of the transmission. but there is two problems with that. 1- you have to torque down the bolts in order from middle to end or you satnd a good chance of leaks. 2 that want get all the transmission fluid out. You can however go to your nearest dealer and get a tranny flush it uaully runs about 80 or 90 bucks!
