I need the timing marks to set the crankshaft to top dead center for a timing belt replacement. I just need a diagram to show me where the timing marks are located, where should the camshaft pulley mark be pointed to ?

1996-1999 Toyota Corolla valve timing:
It is very easy to install the timing belt on 1997 Toyota Corolla. Do the following:
- Mark the numbers 1,2 and 3 on the spark plug wires with permanent marker or nail polish and remain the 4th one unmarked. This is necessary so that you can easily remember the spark plug wires order later on their original position.
- Remove the spark plugs so that the engine can easily be rotated.
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to align the v- groove mark on the crankshaft pulley with the 0 mark on the timing belt cover. If these marks are aligned the piston is always on the Top Dead Position (TDC).


- To replace the timing belt remove the crankshaft pulley, upper and lower timing covers.
- Temporarily screw in the crankshaft bolt in its place to rotate the crankshaft with the spanner and align the v- groove of lower crankshaft gear with the index mark on the oil pump cover as shown in the following diagram.
- Inspect the cam shaft mark through the small hole on the cam shaft sprocket. The punch mark should be exactly behind the hole on the cam shaft sprocket as shown in the following diagram.



- Loosen the timing bearing bolt, press the bearing forcefully against the spring with some suitable tool and lock it there temporarily.
- Remove the timing belt.
- Remove the timing bearing.
- Replace the new timing belt and bearing with the original.
- Install in the reverse order of dis-assembly.
NOTE: NEVER PUT EXTRA FORCE ON TIMING BEARING TO ADJUST THE TIMING BELT TENSION. JUST LOOSEN THE TIMING BEARING BOLT AND THE SPRING ATTACHED TO IT WILL PULL THE BEARING IT SELF WITH THE PRESET TENSION TO ADJUST THE TIMING BELT.

1. Loosen tensioner adjusting bolt.

1. Using Camshaft Belt Tension Adjusting Tool T74P-6254-A, pry tensioner clockwise against spring tension as far as possible.

1. Tighten adjusting bolt to hold tensioner in released position.

1. Align crankshaft so number one piston is at TDC (top dead center) with crankshaft key pointing straight up and circle on crankshaft sprocket (6306) aligned with notch in engine front cover (6019) .

1. Align triangle on camshaft sprocket with triangle on inner timing belt cover.

1. Align diamond on oil pump sprocket with diamond on inner timing belt cover.

Refer to your manual for all proper safety procedures.
Engage the emergency brake.
Jack up the car and support it on jack stands.
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for your safety.
Make sure the transmission is in neutral.
Remove all spark plugs.
Remove any plastic shields from underneath the engine.
Drain coolant.
Remove cooling fan and any plastic fan coverings from the front of the engine (usually reverse-threaded, so turn right to loosen).
Disconnect all cooling hoses from engine and label for easy reassembly.
Remove the radiator from the car, may or may not have to.
Remove the engine drive belts.
Remove the cap and rotor.
Remove the water pump pulley.
Remove the bolts holding the upper timing belt cover.
Place a socket on the center of the crankshaft pulley. Rotate engine to top dead center (TDC), which means that the first piston in an inline engine is at the top. There's a mark showing TDC on the pulley and the engine.
Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolts. Remove the crankshaft pulley and vibration damper.
Remove the lower timing belt cover.
Mark the location of the main tensioner bolt.
Remove the bolt that holds the tensioner and timing belt cover.
Remove the main adjustment bolt for the tensioner.
Remove the freed tensioner and tensioner spring.
Once the tensioner is off, the belt comes off.
Again, make sure the engine is set to top dead center, which will make confirmation of the timing marks easier.
Install a new timing belt and tensioner, making sure to properly align the timing marks as you do so.
Adjust the tension of the new belt.
Confirm all timing marks are lined up.
Put everything back together, following the reverse of the steps in the previous section.

autozone or advance can print out a timing belt lineup diagram for you..it will show the crankshaft(bottom pulley) mark the intermediate mark(the shaft for the distributor) and the cam mark(top shaft that works the valves)..with the engine at top dead center on the no.1 piston the timing mark on 0.. these marks should all line up.. if not , release the tension on the belt as shown in the step-by step from the store, and re-align them..good luck..

when i plugged in power it make like electrical bomb with bad smell and it didn't turn on after that.

The engine is a free running type so bent valves should not be the problem. Recheck the timing marks on the camshafts and crankshaft. If you are one timing belt tooth off, the engine could run but run rough. With the number 1 cylinder piston at top dead center, the camshaft marks should be lined up with their "TDC" marks and the crankshaft mark should be at 0 deg.

If the distributor was removed during the belt replacement, make sure it is in time with the crankshaft timing mark. When the No. 1 cylinder piston is at top dead center, the crankshaft timing mark should be on 0 deg. and the distributor rotor should be pointing to the number 1 terminal on the distributor cap at the same time.

Timing Belt & Sprockets Removal & Installation 3.2L Engine To Remove:
TDC compression stroke timing marks

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Timing belt cover
   • Crankshaft damper
3. Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotation direction, clockwise using the J 42098 or other suitable tool until the # 1 cylinder is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. The reference marks on the camshaft gears should be aligned with the corresponding notches on the rear timing belt cover, as well as the mark on the crankshaft sprocket and oil pump housing. Timing marks 60 degrees from TDC
   
   
4. Rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise using the J 42098 or other suitable tool until 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). The 60 degrees BTDC point can be identified by the index mark on the oil pump cover. Using the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool
   
   
5. Install the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool to the crankshaft sprocket with the knurled bolt.
6. Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction, clockwise using the J 42098 until the lever of the J 42069-10 or other suitable tool firmly contacts the water pump pulley flange. The # 1 cylinder is at TDC at this point.
7. Secure the moveable lever of the tool to the water pump pulley flange. Tools in cam gears
   
   
8. Install the J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 or other suitable tools to the camshaft gears. If the J 42069-1 or the J 42069-2 or other suitable tools do not fit into the teeth of the camshaft gears, it may be necessary to loosen the upper idler pulley and turn the eccentric or camshaft gears until the tool can be inserted.
9. Loosen the timing belt tensioner nut.
10. Loosen the upper idler pulley bolt.
11. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Lower idler pulley bolt
    • Lower idler pulley and spacer
    • J 42069-10 or other suitable tool from the crankshaft sprocket WARNING
      After timing belt is removed, never turn camshaft and crankshaft independently. Do not remove J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 or other suitable tools while the belt is removed.

TDC is top dead center/ remove spark plug on cylinder no. 1/ rotate the crankshaft pulley using a socket wrench and power handle and check if the piston on your cylinder no. 1 reach the top center that is TDC/ remove timing belt cover and locate a synchronized marking on your camshaft and crankshaft pulley/ remove old timing belt/ install a new one but make sure that the mark on your camshaft and crankshaft is perfectly synchronized before putting the cover/ manually rotate the crankshaft pulley again and see if it rotates 360 deg. freely then you can be sure you did the job correctly.
