2006 GMC Envoy gas gauge not functioning properly.
When I fill my tank it the gas gauge goes up and down and eventually the fuel light comes on and in a few minutes it may go off even though I have anywhere from a half to a full tank of gas.

GMC sent me a letter saying that gas guage not working has been a problem and they will fix and pay half. Also my mechanic says that it is common to get a check engine lite when you add gas to tank, especially when you fill it. Sometimes I will take off gas cap and let air out then replace cap and the check engine lite will go off. (usually). Nothing to worry about.
{: ) It is still safe to drive as long as you are aware you have enough gas for the trip. The problem is your fuel level sensor could be getting erratic and sending inaccurate signals to the engine control module, thus illuminating the check engine light at times. If you unexpectedly run out of fuel, thats when you will stall on the road. Better have it checked as soon as possible.
It is most likely your fuel level sending unit has gone bad. It sits inside your fuel tank to tell the fuel guage how much gas you have in the tank.
The sending unit for the gas gauge is in the fuel tank and part of the fuel pump module, it is not sold seperately. Price is around $350.00, 2 hours labor to install the part.
Common problem on the 03-06 Envoy instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Envoy fuel gauge problems
this is caused by one thing only, the gas guage sending unit is defective, this fuel gauge sending unit is part of the gas tank mounted fuel pump module, cost $360.00. see photo.
this is a giant comon problem right now with gm vechiles it is in the fuel sending unit the unit needs to be replaced ( about 400$) and the gas tank needs to be dropped out to get to it for many more people with the same proble go to topix.com there is about 96 of us with the same problem
Sending unit. Its all one unit including fuel pump, float, ect. The check engine light is because of the high or low resistance in the unit. Let me know if you have already fixed.. You have to drop the tank to get to it also.
