2001 Ford Focus w/166K miles; check engine light came on. Changed filters, spark plugs added fuel injection cleaner to gas. Ran smooth and great for about 8 miles. Now will not stay started and running extremely rough when it starts.

Tune Time.

2)new air filter (check every 35000 miles)
3)new fuel filter (every 35000 miles)
4)1 bottle of STP fuel treatment (red bottle) 4x a year.
5) oil and filter change (castrol or another good quality oil every 3-4000 miles.
6)proper air pressure in tires (check every 2 months
7) service transmission every 40000 miles or less.
New oil and filter
8) new plug wires every 80000 miles.
Even a small amount of bad gas can cause your problem.
So the first thing you need to do is remove your fuel tank so you can drain all of the old fuel out, then remove the fuel sending unit and fuel pump assembly thats in your fuel tank and clean the filter screen, after that you can reinstall the fuel tank, replace your fuel filter and I would have a fuel injector sevice done.
Unless you are very skilled in automotive repair, leave this one to a pro.
Safely, take your car on a highway or street ( dry pavement ) with no cars or other persons around. Stop the car, proceed to approx. 20 Km/h. Then push the gas pedal down close to the floor, if the car bucks and chucks change the fuel filter and retest. If the problem is still present, I recommend the fuel pump. Have it checked first.
