Automatic transmission not shifting, starts in higher gear

I have a 1995 Chevy Tahoe, 4wd w/a 350. I just replaced the rear axle and now the transmission does not seem to be working properly. I noticed that when I take off there is no power so I manually downshifted and gained some power. It seems that the transmission is starting off in 3rd or overdrive. When I downsift, it will go down to second, even when I manually shift to first it only goes down to second. I checked the fluid, seems to be overfull according to the dipstick or the fluid is overheated and bubbling up. I have no idea why this is happening as no fluid was added when I changed the rear axle.

Is there a linkage that could've slipped loose and be causing this or does this sould like an internal transmission problem?

Thanks for your response. How do I test to see if it is a modulator?

  • lakespyder Nov 17, 2009

No modulator on this.....it does use a shift silenoid which is located in the transmission. I have tried to search to see what the symptoms of a failure in this silenoid would be, but have not been able to come up with an answer.

Unit I replaced it with was from salvage yard and had all the same parts as my old one. Everything hooked right up. The gear ratio is the same. I did drive it a little with the drive shaft removed prior to replacement, that is when I noticed the problem begin, not after replaement of the rear end.

Did you transfer the speed sensor from your old rear end to the new unit, if not do it. Also didn't you change the gears in the rear end?

You may want to still try your old speed sensor? Also your modulator is behind the glove box near the ecm. I had to replace my modulator also because was having a similiar problem. The box is white and the size of a mans wallet. Is your ABS light coming on?

1995 z28 Chevy camero will not shift correctly after first gear after the transmission filter and gaskets had been replaced, and new transmission fluid.??

When you say after first gear do you mean it shifts
from first to second and then does not shift after that. If that is what you are saying the problem is most likly the 3/4 clutch. The transmission is a 4L60E 4 speed automatic.
The 3/4 clutch is a week point in this transmission.

My 1995 Chevy Tahoe won't shift gears as I'm

Probably the speed sensor on the transmission. It would cause both problems. You should also have a check engine light with a trouble code for the sensor.

I have a 1995 Chevy Tahoe with an automatic transmission which will all of a sudden not shift out of third gear. What is going on here?

check the wiring on top of the transmission. there is an electrical plug for the speed sensor, if it is loose, the veh will not shift correctly. get someone to remove it, reset the wires in the plug and clean the female end of the plug on the transmission. I have the same problem. It jumps from first to 3rd then back and forth then finally stays in 3rd. I pushed the wires in to set them in deeper on the plug and it seems to help.

Left rear tire drags in 4wd

Check the fluid in the the axle. Also make sure the brake isn't locking up. You might want to take the axle gear cover off and see if the "C" clip came off or is broken on the gear assembly. Almost sounds like the differentials is locking up.

Sounds like you may have smoked high gear clutches. Check your fluid and see if the color is darker than normal and smells burnt...
