To begin with, I had 1st and 3rd gears for a few miles and then overdrive would be available. Now (d4) light stays on all the time and I only have 2nd and overdrive. Could it be the transmission control module or something more expensive?
Same problem, only 2nd and 4th gears (92 ex, auto with 175k). Missed diagnosed by previous mechanics, replaced engine coolant sensor. Couldn't figure that one out? Went back because problem reoccured within a week and now much worse than before. They diagnosed as bad TCM this time and want over $700 to fix, in addition to the other $300 I spent. Said a resister was burnt on the board. Did not believe them. I pulled the board myself (located under the pass. floor mat, disconnect battery, remove four screws and pull the wiring out and open it up). Looked at board myself did not see anything wrong, but does not mean that it isn't bad. Research on the web said that it might be a bad release solenoid on the shift handle? It's located in the center console underneath the plastic covering near the park brake. That checked out ok. So I ordered a TCM from allcomputerresources.com ($155) should be here in a couple of days. I hope this helps me and you. Good luck.
Could need new solenoids, wiring or computer, cheaper than new tranny
Same problem I have.Took it to auto shop, they told me trans control module but could not confirm it, and it is a $300-400 part..so now what? I drive it in D2 gear all the time..yike.
