The car would not start. Battery works. I banged on the starter and jumped it and it started again. Is it the starter?
Hi,
A little fuzzy here... please clarify. If the battery is good, why did you need to jump it? I'm assuming the engine never turned over when you initially had the problem.
If you banged on the starter and it cranked without jumping, I would definitely say yes... starter.
Scenarios:
1. If the jumper cables are connected and nothing happens, then you bang on the starter and it cranks, I would suspect an issue with the starter.
2. If you bang on the starter and nothing happens, then connect the jumper cables and it cranks, I would suspect battery.
3. If you bang on the starter and nothing happens, connect the jumper cables and still nothing happens, then bang on the starter again and it cranks, I would suspect starter.
Sorry... the "jumper" part just needs to be studied.
If it does it again, try to keep this in mind so you can determine if battery or starter.
Fuzzy, I know, but hope it helps... Good luck!
If you banged on the starter motor and it started then you have a stickie bendix drive and solinoid sticking
But if you have to also jump start it as well then do this.....When it wont start before doing anything else turn on the lights and hit the starter and if the lights go dim or go out the battery is no good or you have a short in the eletc ...so take battery lead off for 2 days and if starts you have a SHORTin the eletrics
