How to replace 95 automatic v6 starter motor. The solinoid switch is sticking so I want to replace the current starter.

Sounds like the solenoid is bad.The solenoid uses a small amount of current from the start device to control your feed to the starter from the battery. It is an electro-magnetic device and is subject to wear over time. Service on these is replacement only.You might want to check that the starter button/switch is feeding current to the solenoid when you try to start it up.good luck

Best guess is the Solinoid (on top of the Starter) is the cause.
There will be a Main cable from the battery bolted onto the Solinoid. Near this (a separate terminal) will be a much thinner wire. This supplies the current from the ign. Sw. to the Solinoid.
Disconnect it. Re-Connect the battery.
If this doesn't fix the problem, Repair the Starter Motor.
If this fixes the problem, turn the Ign. Sw. on and touch the wire back to the terminal.
If the problem is back, the problem is the Ign. Sw.

WWhen looking at the starter you will notice the solinoid mouted on top of it, the solinoid has one ten mm stud sticking out the rear of it with a short cable running down to another short stud sticking out of the rear of the starter motor. Connect the main battery lead to the stud on the solinoid before you reconnect the battery

hi, i think you have put the MAIN HEAVY CABLE direct to the STARTER MOTOR on the SOLINOID. this will keep the starter motor running. take battery lead NEGATIVE CABLE OFF the BATTERY, and change the MAIN HEAVY CABLE from the SOLINOID terminal to the other MAIN terminal on the SOLINOID and NORMALLY it SHOULD go with a SLIGHTY (smaller cable this GO'S to the FUSEBOX rest of car POSITIVE FEED). the other small wire is the solinoid START WIRE. the solinoid has 2 circuits the first circuit is HEAVY BATTERY LEAD to 1 terminal on the solinoid. the other side of the solinoid HEAVY CABLE to STARTER MOTOR. this is only 1 side of the SOLINOID (THIS IS A VERY VERY HEAVY SWITCH). the other side of the SOLINOID is the START SIDE (REMOTE CONTACT) of the SOLINOID, by turning the IGNITION KEY to STARTER POSITION, this operates the SOLINOID. this makes contact to run the starter motor. once the connections are done REPLACE NAGATIVE BATTERY LEAD and start the car. gerry

Sounds like the starter solinoid is sticking....same thing will happen if you put the wrong wires on the wrong post on the solinoid. I would replace the solinoid....this might happen again at a bad time. They are cheap... replace it.

If that's the case, it probably is most likely a faulty key ignition switch. However, solenoid switches (near the battery) are notorious for being bad out of the box, so I'd start there. It's cheaper and easier to replace than the ignition switch.

Check the ground cable going from the battery to
alternator, then to chassis. Make sure there is no
rust at the chassis ground wire terminal, and that it
is very tight. The fusible link will be off the alternator
red power cable,usually, but not 100% on that car.

it is one of two things.

• the starter is either worn and brushes not making contact or an engine oil leak onto the starter. thus keeping the brushes from making contact you can check this by banging on the starter while someone trys turning the ignition back and forth to start.(making the click click click)

• ignition switch is weak, not providing enough voltage from the to kick the soliniod all the way to start the starter

The way to check that is to hot wire the starter soliniod little wire, to battery voltage. (the big cable on the solinoid)
If it turns over good, then you can either replace the ignition switch or install a relay someware near the starter to supply it with propper current to kick the solinoid all the way to engage the motor.
The relay acts as a remote starter switch that feeds more direct power to the starter solinoid.Now the only thing the ignition switch is responsible for, is trigger the relay.

If you're SURE the battery is good, it's either a loose wire, bad starter solinoid, or bad ignition switch. Check the wires on the starter, with the batter disconected of course. Make sure they are thight on the starter studs. If they are, you'll see two small prongs/studs, and one large one. THIS IS DANGEROUS ESPICALLY IF YOU HAVE A MANUAL TRANNI!!! An automatic wouldn't be a prob, but if it's a manual, make sure it's in netural and to be safe, a guy in the truck with foot on the brake. Take a small wire, and use it to jump current from the large stud to the small one with a wire hooked up to it. If it turns over, it's your ignition switch. If not, it's your starter solinoid. Solinoids can be replaced but most people just replace the whole starter. Hope this helps.

you need a mechanic that can pull the starter and have him replace the starter solinoid or tighten up all the bolts and connections and turn the disk around on the solinoid.
