My 1996 toyota tacoma wont start when hot

Have to make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections good. How long since a tune-up? Are there any applicable trouble codes?
If the starter motor won't crank, have to check starter wiring circuits. Usually two voltage circuits at the starter motor. One is battery voltage, hot all the time. The other circuit usually goes hot with the key in the crank position and may be wired through a relay and clutch or neutral switch, depending on the tranny. The ground for the starter motor is usually through the engine block. Any testing, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and functional parking brake is set. Safety is your responsibility when working on a vehicle.

Your starter is going bad. When the brushes and bushings get worn, it does exactly what your describing. Sometimes you can Wack the starter with a hammer and it will start(if you can get to it) a good solid blow or 2...just make sure you don't wack the solenoid. Change your starter or have it rebuilt.

look for the valet switch. Google/youtube "how to use valet switch" (add in the brand of alarm.

I have owned a few Toyota vehicles including a 4 runner with this problem---the ( I call it) solinoid motor which is on the starter will stick--bad and considering you have to remove the starter--buy a new one that comes with that part as well---not sure if yours is exactly the same but a 20 minute job to get that starter out--last one I replaced in my 4 runner was just over 100 dollars rebuilt.

there is either a short in the switch or its grounding something out

Look On The Left Side Of the Air Filter Housing and Disconnect The Plug Thats Attached To The Spark Plug Like Plastic Sensor Mounted on The Side Of the Air Filter Housing, Now Go Start Your Truck !!! Your Truck Will Start And RUN Fine Now ! Replace The Sensor Approx $59 at Autozone... This Should Fix 90% Of Your Problems If your In the other 10% and it does not Fix it , Email Me and Ill See If I Can Help !
