Your actual firing order is determined by the position of the rod journals on the crankshaft. At top dead center, the #1 piston is supposed to be all the way up in the cylinder bore and both #1intake and exhaust valves are closed.
Valve opening and closing is determined by cam timing, which you set "in phase" by using the reference marks on the crank and cam gear(s). Since both the crankshaft and camshaft both are one solid piece, it is not necessary to index all other cylinders. Unless you initially set those references incorrectly or allow them to change during the install, once set, those settings do not change unless the belt fails. Your distributor is driven by the camshaft. Being removable, you can incorrectly install it but that will not change the firing order, but can make the expected spark happen too early or too late. There are no relevant markings on a timing belt. The teeth on the belt are evenly spaced and match those on the gears. If the gears are indexed correctly, the belt will function properly however it is positioned when installed. If you were to put a crayon mark on the back of the belt, and reference that mark to any fixed point on the block, after turning the engine two full revolutions, it will return to the reference mark. Therefore, your question makes no sense at all.

Hello sjmorris: My name is Roger and I can help. First make sure the timing marks are correct at the timing belt. The Marks off just one tooth will change every thing. Next the firing order is 1-3-4-2. Next you will need to take the computer out of the equation. to do this locate the DATA link connector. You will find this on the right side of the car. Will be behind the strut tower ans in front of the firewall. Small rectangular box with a cover over it. Inside the box locate the terminals marked E1 and TE1. jump the two terminals together. A paper clip will work just fine. Start the car set timing to 10 degrees BTDC. Remove jumper engine should now be properly timed.
