1997 Chrysler Town and Country Transmission clunks with downshift

Hello,

My Town and Country started clunking when downshifting either in passing gear or just slowing down. I went out of town yesterday and noticed it was doing it more often and a bit harder on the clunking part now. It has 120,000 miles on it and otherwise runs great. I also think it has all wheel drive. I just purchased it in June 09' and have maintenance records for the past 6 years. Never a transmission problem so far that I can tell.

Thanks for your help.

Linda

Check the universal joints in the drive shaft to rear axel. 120,000 miles, its time for replacement. Safety hazard exist, check soon. Also transmission filter should have been serviced at 60,000 miles. Its time.

SOURCE: 1987 Honda Accord Jolts When Shifting up and down to 2nd

hi, its best you get this looked at soon as possible the chances are it could just be that you need the fluid topping up and will need checking for any leaks.
The problem is if it gets to bad then replacing an auto box is very expensive and is hard to do so its best you get it looked at before it gets beyond repair.
Taking it into a garage will be your best option as they will have a special tool for testing the pressure in the auto box and also the fluid level.
If it has got to bad and cant be solved by fluid alone then the cheapest option would be to get a reconditioned box and getting this fitted as a new one will cost a fortune.
Hope this is some help to you let me know how you get on or if you have any questions ok

SOURCE: 2007 Lincoln MKZ Transmission goes CLUNK on low speed downshift

sounds like an electronic fault caused by the mini computer controling the gearbox functions, try another dealer as dealer only as good as the mechanics it employs.and like the old adage if you only pay peanuts you only get monkeys.but thinking about it ,their is a possibility of a piston sticking in the box thats controling the brake bands.buy a manual next time

SOURCE: 1997 town&counrty AWD has a clunk when backing

The drive train could be binding up when hard turns are done. its common on AWD vehicles, but there should not be any clunking or noises. its possible you have worn rear drive shaft joints? i dont think it would be the half shafts due to the dont turn. or mover up and down that much. the drive shaft to the rear diff would have more stress.

I would have a garage check it out ASAP. cause you would need someone under there to check. i dont suggest doing that in your driveway for saftey reasons. hopefully its something thats not too expensive.

SOURCE: How do I change the transmission fluid in a 1997

remove the trans pan this is the one facing down and towards the front dont pull end cover or diff cover. filter is under it install new filter and reinstall pan refill to correct level. keep in mind that changing the fluid this way only gets out about half the fluid because there is no way to drain the torque conveter also dont try to change the fluid when van is hot let me know if you need anything else

Yes, the car will probably shift harder (if it has an automatic transmission) and it won't shift correctly when you try to accelerate at speeds over 30 MPH (it will downshift too many gears).

This is called the limp mode. It means that you have a transmission problem. It goes into limp mode to protect the transmission from total failure. You need to take it to a transmission shop to perform a diagnosic test to see if it needs repair or replace

I just got my Trany replaced now I am smelling smoke and my 2001 Chrysler Town and Country is making a whistling sound. I am getting a trouble code of P 1664.

How is the power output?. Does it downshift into passing gear? If not , ck your cat converter. They whistle when restricted and kill the power output. Good Luck

2001 chysler T&C downshifting

It must be seeing a fault coming out of 4th gear. The downshift is "Limp In" mode. That is about when the Clutch Volumn is recalculated. It may be having OverDrive issues (which is internal) You need to have a diagnostic done with a scanner. Find out which fault is occuring and then go from there. There may even be updates for the TCM. Let me know how that goes?

No higher gears

I read this over and over on these vans, same problem, you will need to have the trans overhauled to correct this problem, a $3000 job on this particular car.
