I have a '95 Isuzu trooper that's been sitting (with occasional runs) for the last couple years. This week, after a month sitting, I heard an engine flutter upon acceleration and noticed I wasn't getting the pick up that I should be getting while accelerating. I did notice that if I kept a real light foot and didn't dramatically gas it, the problem vanished (or was less noticeable) but it's hilly country where I live and sometimes you have to put the foot on the pedal. Does this sound like a ignition module issue?
If it was mine I would get as much of the old fuel out of the tank as I could.(syphon or look at tank for a drain plug)Change the fuel filter.Fill it with fresh fuel.Add a bottle of (Red color) STP fuel treatment. This will help remove condensation form the tank. Also check the condition of the air filter and install a fresh set of spark plugs, properly gaped.
The octaine in you old gas gets weak. Its not good to let it sit for so long.
I hope this helps you.
I'm having the same problem in my 95 trooper, except mine didn't sit like his did. I have let it sit for lengthy periods of time, however, because it's my 2nd vehicle. The above solution reminded me that I thought about the moisture thing a few times before, but forgot about it until now.
I had a similar problem on a '89 Isuzu Pickup, after using my friends old gas can, after running out of gas. Almost certainly the gas can had a fair amount of condensation, as it had been sitting in his back yard who knows how long. The truck immediately began suffering from intermittent weakness after using that gas can. I think my 95 Trooper started experiencing this same problem as Baugnond either after getting gas from an ancient backwoods gas station, or from sitting a couple months last winter.
Bottom line is that I'm writing this, because I want to add the following tip. I've heard recommendations to top off the fuel tank, to prevent condensation, when you know you're going to let your vehicle sit for a while, such as going on a vacation.

Here's the thing, I filled it up 6 weeks ago and added a fuel treatment then, which doesn't seem that long ago to me. I also had the oil and coolant changed in mid-July when I got the vehicle inspected. I'll have to check with them if they changed the spark plugs out (but I thought they did)
