The front axle, cv joint and dic break rota

I am trying to identify what is the cause of a crinking metal sound from the front axle (right side), especially when move slowly its quite clear. This follows recent repair works including: Had the CV joint on the right front tyre side tightened as it was loose ( loose would otherwise result in a conveyor sound while driving) I also had the rota on that end re-faced as it had uneven grooves ( the grooves caused a squicking sound) and put back. The disc pads, rota and other parts are all the same as previously. My concern is could the CV joint be tigthened too tight to cause that metal grating sound?? or could there be other reasons for it? Maybe to put a whole new disc rota, if the re-facing not done well. Would you recommend changing the rota and pads? or is the problem a minor one.

For your advise.

I have heard that loud wind noise you say, but only seldom I think bearing is ok,at least for next 6 months I hope the sound is more like a a metal grinding sound...cr cr cr... cr cr cr..the noise stays the same its low but enough to hear, its not a wind sound but a metal grinding sound. Please advise further on remedial action

Sound started after I re-faced the right disc rota and tigthened the CV joint on the same side.

I thought it was the break and tested it but the break seems ok, sound occurs almost always when driving slow under 10km in gear 1 that is pulling out of and parking the vehicle or slowing down to go over a road hump even when the brake is not used.... when i speed up it almost vanishes until when I slow down to park.

    Manual transmission

I down shift to gear 1 before I step on the brakes.
It doesnt go away when I shift to second. I just discovered now the sound also comes when I step on the brakes. But that doesnt make sense why does it come when I'm not stepping on brakes?

I will check accordingly, you are great help.

Had the front rotor and rim checked, its both okay, I got area of sound wrong perhaps I pushed the car down and the sound comes from the rear axle joints, i think it may need greasing, or something will have to get it checked.

Does the sound get louder as you drive, does it start to sound like a moaning or loud wind noise? If it does the most common problem is a bad bearing that the rotor bolts to and the axle slides through.

  • Anonymous Sep 20, 2009

    automatic or manual transmission

can you jack up your front tire

  • Anonymous Sep 20, 2009

another common problem i just remembered sometimes when removing the rotor the backing plate gets bent and contacts the rotor try taking the wheel off and inspecting the rotor backing plate and correct pad installation also look for unusual marks on the rotor also look for any scraping damage to inside of rim

Had a Loud noise when turning that sounded like something exploded then it made an awful noise turning left or right that sounded like metal trash cans

Please have a tire shop or local repair shop check the CV axle joints, they are the most likely issue here. Don't wait or the axle can break off at the CV Joint and disable the car.

Front axle how to install

You'll need to extract the end the axle shaft from the hub bearing. There is not enough play in the axle shaft to allow this without at least partially removing the front strut assembly. Sometimes just separating the lower ball joint will allow the strut/spring to move enough to work the spline out the bearing. Once you've done that, then you must "pop" the inner CV joint out of the transaxle. It is installed with a snap ring to hold it in place. This process can be tricky and you can damage the CV joint or the transaxle case if you don't exercise caution while doing this. Be careful not to pull outward on the axle shaft...this will not release the inner joint and will most likely cause the inner joint to separate, making removal more difficult.

How does a cv joint drive shaft goes bad

cv joints are covered with a plastic/rubber boot to keep the road dirt out and lubricating grease in''the inner works of a cv joint are an alloy metal with honeycomb chambers for the joint bearings to fit inside of..do this.. take your left hand and make a fist..then fit the fist into the spread open fingers of the right hand ..rotate both hands together back and forth..your ncv axle turns in much the same way..when dirt gets into the joint due to cover failure..this joint wears out because it has engine torque(twisting) pressure on it while moving..along with grit and dirt grinding away at both the metal and the bearings inside causing lots of slop in the joint..now if the engine torque becomes too strong for the worn out chambers in the joint, they will break..remember they arent steel,,they are alloy..thus rendering the joint unuseable ( slip your left hand inside the right between the fingers to grt the idea.. thats what the cv joint on your car is doing...so replacement is necessary..its not an easy job since most cars front suspension is opened up during this proceedure,,,car is ten years old do you feel that its worth the money? call for rates first...good luck and repost findings thnx

Check the brake system of front right wheel. I am sure, the problem is there only.

Clunk under auto center front when turning left or right

have your CV joints checked. If the CV joint boots crack, the joint will lose all the grease and accumilate dirt. This will cause a metal grind/ping when making turns. If ignored, it may cause the joint to break causing the vehicle to be stationary and unable to move. Hopefully this help!!

I replaced both front end bearings and now it makes a cliking sound on the driver side. It only makes that sound when the wheel is turned completely to the left or right.

Hi:
The clicking is most likely one of your front axle CV joints. Did you use a torque wrench when you reinstalled the axle nuts? If not, you should loosen both sides and torque to the proper tightness. Hopefully that will fix your problem. If not, then you could have a CV joint that has wear, and is causing the click.

My driver side cv joint inner boot keeps breaking

Are you replacing the cv axle yourself. If you are going with an aftermarket axle, that may be your problem. I would recommend going back to O.E. Also, some original saturn parts may be hard to find.

94 Geo Prizm CV or driveaxle?

on this type of vehichle, you have two axles in the front; one going to each side. Chances are that the boot at the axle joint was torn and that is why you are having problem. In teh past people used to replace the boot, this day and age its actually cheaper to replace the axle. So you would need to replace that side of the axle (the half shaft).
