I had that exact code a couple weeks ago. Mine needed new oxygen sensors. They(there are 2, only one was throwing a code, but I had both replaced) cost a little over $100 to have replaced.

The upstream sensor is between the catalytic converter and the engine, the downstream one is between the catalytic converter and tailpipe. I had my mechanic replace them, so my cost was what I paid him to do the work. If you're handy, and able to do the work yourself, it would probably be less.

Engine light won't go ouy

Hi Patricia, The fault code indicates there is something wrong with the evaporation system on your vehicle. Take it to a shop and once the fault is rectified they will clear the fault code with their scanner. Regards John

2000 chevy impala codep0440 ck hoses n change gas cap still code come back

Hi there:
There is a TSB about this fault code, you will need to check or replace harnesses connections.

The EVAP solenoid harness may be misrouted around the rear antilock brake (ABS) wire harness causing a chaff/damage to the EVAP vent solenoid harness, setting DTC P0440.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

03 cavalier shows p0440 code startrs stumbs and dies

P0440 code translates to Evaporative Emmission System (EVAP). I suspect that your gas cap is not fitting tight enough on your tank to build up enough pressure to keep the EVAP sensor from detecting a fault. You may have to replace your gas cap or check to see if it was tight. It may take a few trips with the fault fixed to extinguish the light and more to get rid of the P0440 code in your computer. Removing the cable on your battery, the negative one for about two or three minutes may be enough to make your computer forget.

Service engine soon code po440 2002 chevy trailblazer

A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • The gas cap is not installed or working properly
  • The purge solenoid has failed
  • The canister is plugged and not working properly
With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
  • Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
  • Check and/or replace the sensor
  • Check and/or replace the purge valve
  • Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks
Get a new gas cap first to try.
thanks
