Internet search suggests faulty alternator, after testing and cleaning battery cables, but some after market alternators also continued to display the error, so be careful in purchasing a replacement alternator.

its an inline filter in a plastic housing in front of the engine

This is most likely the Cable loom that runs into the top of the tailgate. A common symptom of this is that you also get a tailgate open message

How do i get at the screen wash water bottle on a volvo v50 as it is leaking

inside the wheel arch behind the plastic cover you should be able to access the bottle to remove it.
the bad thing is that some of the mounting screws are behind the bumper.
i don't know a lot about volvo but i did do some research and everything points to the archway

You need to unplug the fuel return line from the fuel pump and suck the fuel back to the system on the pump and filter side.
