This would suggest not, although it says general purpose.

DEXTRON-III Automatic Transmission Fluid

In 2005 GM introduced Dexron VI to supercede all previous versions of fluid to use in automatic transmissions. You can continue to use Dexron III, and it will work fine in your older application. However, Dexron VI is backwardly compatible. This newer specification of ATF is supposed to handle heat and shifting better than the older fluids.

One further imprtant note: Do NOT use Dexron VI in manual transmissions and power steering units.


A 2004 Chevrolet Aveo uses Dexron III (H) automatic transmission fluid.

it uses DEXRON III but the updated replacement for that is DEXRON VI , so use the DEXRON VI

Dexron VI is fine for what you're doing. These "upgraded" fluids are made to be compatible with the older ones as well as the new ones.

yes you use DEXRON VI or any other brand fluid meeting the same GM STANDARDS as DEXRON VI, Pennsoil makes a less expensive ATF that fills the bill.

dextron III automatic transmission fluid. bottom pan removed it takes 7.4 quarts to refill. completely dry it takes 13.4 quarts.

Your trans came with Dexron III, but it is recommended that you use the new Dexron VI when u service it, the new fluid costs more, but is far superior, and soon will be the only fluid availiable as the other DEXRON types are phased out.
