Pull the motor and Tranny both at the same time. Otherwise, you will have to remove the remove everything from the side of the car IE: tire, strut, tierod, A-Frame and so forth. I have always just pulled them both at the same time making it the easiest way.

Support the car very securely first of all
Remove the negative cable from the battery
Remove the wires from the starter
Remove the two bolts from the starter going upward to the engine block
Wiggle the starter out
Reverse this proceedure to reinstall

You do need to connect the ground lead to the battery. Connect the positive lead to the battery post, then connect the ground lead to metal bracket or chassis nut on the colt bolt. Then connect the positive to the other car and negative to the other car. Keep in mind, always connect the positive first and disconnect the positive last.

If it happened to me, I'd first check the shift cable and/or trans pawl to see if I had it properly aligned
