You are talking about the old 1970s UK Ford pushrod crossflow "Kent" engines? 1.1/1.3/1.6 etc?
when you say 'valve timing" exactly what do you mean, or which job trying to do? Are you actually grinding a cam???ie changing or making cam lobes?
Or just refitting a normal camshaft to the engine and want to know the angle/position to fit it?
SOURCE: Escort Mk2 1600 valve and torques settings what are they
cylinder bolt torque settings stage 1 15 ft pounds
stage 2 50 ft pounds
stage 3 85 ft pounds
valve clearences 0.15 - 0.20mm inlet
0.22 - 0.27mm exhaust
these are the figures i have been supplied with, you can also use
cylinder bolts stage 1 10 ft pounds
stage 2 50 ft pounds
stage 3 + 90deg.
with my exp, i would use the first guide as the degree method has a tendancy to snap head bolts, especially on older vehicles.

Try eBay....now and then something like that comes up. I don't know of any company that reprints old owners manuals.
SOURCE: bent valves 2000 Ford Escort ZX2
a couple bent valves shouldnt be more then a few hundred dollars to have replacedand can be fixed yes, but also the vehicle has to have another timing chain ooput on and be retimed this will probably be a total cost of somewhere in the $800 dollar range (this is only an estimate!!) to replace your entire engine would cost substantially more and in all realit i would try to sell the opother vehicle for parts, trade in, or as a whole and buy another vehicle before i invested the money into a new engine for this particular car

SOURCE: How do I find TDC through the #1 cyl spark plug
Probably the safest way I can think of is to use a plastic drinking straw. Place it in the spark plug hole (best done when you can see the piston) and rotate the crankshaft slowly by hand. When the straw stops rising you are at TDC. It is better done with a dial indicator but most people don't have one. There are at least three other ways to do this but this is the easiest and safest.
