The battery is probably malfunctioning (or one of the terminals is badly corroded). Have it checked - in particular, have a load test done. In the meantime, try having it jump started by a pro.

SOURCE: High pitch noise when turn key to start / engine not turning over

Check your battery first. Cold weather does horrible things to car batteries... if it's more of a grinding sound I would say that your starter gear is bad. I believe they call it a ring gear? I had a similar problem with a kushman scooter that I use to deliver snowcones through the neighborhoods. It has teeth that need to engage and if those teeth have been grinded down it will have a hard time engaging....

SOURCE: High Pitch whine during acceleration

Hi Pullerwife,

I have a few suggestions for you,

First of all, check your air filter, make sure its clean, not clogged, and doesn't need to be changed.

I don't know how handy you are, but if you are fairly handy, check the idler pulley bearings, if your not, have a shop check it out, as a last resort.

Power steering pump/fluid being low is also a possibility, but thats usually more of a lower pitched whine then what you describe.

You say once the vehicle is warmed up, the whining stops. Does Weather seem to be a factor as well?

Hope I've helped, and don't forget to rate.

Power steering not working

Hi there, check to see if your power steer reservoir is full, if so then your power steer pump has failed, they usually make a noise when low on fluid, that would be the first place I would check, then check for and fluid leak from the reservoir , hope this helps

Whining noise when trying to start my 1994 Concorde but it will not start

To start your car, it may need to be "jumped" by another car to jump start the battery, or you may need someone to bring gas for your car.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When i turn the key forward the engine wants to start but doesnt just makes the roaring noise and doesnt start

It could be the starter, is it high pitch screeching, metal against metal, sound? Or more of whine? If it's metal against metal, the teeth on the flywheel ring gear might be damaged. If it's a high whine you are probably hearing the electric motor part of the stater and the "starter drive" is bad. The stater drive is part of the starter, it's the gear that engages with the flywheel gear. It is a one way clutch, it is supposed to hold when the starter is turning the engine. But, freewheel when the engine starts so it doesn't over rev the starter motor. When the drive goes bad it freewheels both ways. If you think the flywheel teeth are damaged you could try turning the engine by hand a little, WITH THE KEY OFF! Sometimes you can put a wrench on the alternator pulley nut and turn the engine a little. This will move the damaged teeth away from the starter and it might work now. Good luck.
