Sounds like it needs a tune up
That "popping" is probably backfiring at the engine air intake (could be at the carburetor or throttle body - depends on truck year which you have). If so, primary cause would be excessive gas in the engine due to bad ignition timing or flooding. If this vehicle is carbureted, I would first check the carburetor for float or pump problems. If injected, look for a stuck injector.

Possible weak spark from ignition coil or low fuel pressure due to weak pump. Try spraying carb clean into intake throttle body when problem is present. If vehicle will start and run with a little spray then fuel pump is failing.

Backpressure is the result of any obstruction in exhaust flow. Both the converter and muffler create a certain amount of backpressure by design. If the cat becomes plugged, exhaust cannot properly escape and can cause an extreme lack of power. (Engine can't draw in what it can't expell out the other end) Usually the rotten egg smell is also accompanied by a "wheezing" sound in the cat as well.

there are two components that you should be looking at one is called a throttle position sensor and the other is a idle air control motor/valve.these two will make the car hard star or not start at all.the are both located in the general area of the intake manifold right where the throttle cable connects.

replace the gas filter just follow the gas line of the carb it should be easy to find

Sounds like a bad ignition coil. Check for spark right after it quits Coils can and do quit working after they get hot. Also check magnetic pick up coil in distributor. After reaching operating temp computer will move the coil and a broke corroded wire loses connection. Then when engine back to cold wire is back in contact and working. Hope this helped.
