This could be a loose plug at the alternator or dirty connections from corrosion or the belt tensioner has become weak and is not holding the belt firmly so it is slipping on the alternator pulley look at it while someone raises the rpm's quick bursts of gas pedal will make the tensioner flop around loosely instead of slow moving from acceleration it should only slightly move bit ,also check that the alternator is pushing at least 14volt out if it if there isn't enough you have a blown diode from jump starting another car with the cables connected battery to battery

SOURCE: 2000 MERCURY SABLE

My 2000 Sable starts blowing hot air about every 6 months. I mean like an oven. All I do is disconnect the battery negative terminal for about 5 minutes. After I re-connect the problem is solved. This solves many problems on this car, it just needs a re-boot. It must be powered by Microsoft (ha ha). Good luck. ps my auto headlamps never did work right either. Dave.

SOURCE: charging system light on 2002 Mercury Sable

If the light is on there is a problem in the charging system, possibly a defective diode inside the alternator rectifier.

When the air bag system has a problem it uses the air bag light tell you what the codes are. Three flashes then 1 or 2 second pause then 2 flashes would be a code 32. Then Google it and find out what the code is for. Hope this helps
