Hi, several things can cause the fuel pump to fail. The fuel pump not being used for a long time would be one reason. Bad fuel or contaminated fuel would be another reason. If it is a electric fuel pump, then running the car out of fuel will damage a electric fuel pump. A dirty fuel filter will cause the fuel pump to work harder than it should and will cause it to wear out prematurely as well.
