All you can really do at this point is to get it plugged into an OBD2 scanner or a diagnostic system to see what error codes it flags up. The Stop light suggests it will give you codes.
As well as this, go back through everything you did on the engine. Make sure all bolts are tight, all sensors are fitted correctly and all wires and connectors are fitted where they should be. Sometimes you miss something silly that won't let the system work. I know as I've done it.

Take it back to your mechanic to have it checked, it could be anything from a jammed throttle cable to a plugged catalytic converter, if the converter was not replaced and the engine shot antifreeze out the exhaust pipe it may be plugged, but need to know if that was done or not. Also a plugged fuel filter or other unrelated problems can cause this.

To me like some loose electrical connection is resposible for this problem. Check the battery terminals for tightness and the fuses to internal heater. There might be a halfblown fuse or loose connection which is insufficient to make it possible to start the engine, but once in motion the vibration of the var provides enough to keep the connection going to start the engine because after having started the engine, it has no active role to play until you swictch off the engine. On starting time its required. So check sor the loose connection to the heater and the compressor, both of which comes into play in starting the engine...sodeep

Well the first thing is to do a compression test, too make sure that when your belt poped no valves got bent, i think you will see that theres low or no compression in some cylinder from bent valve, if so then have the head removed and repaired, if it has compression then its not the valves, i would triple check the timing marks and make sure the correct marks are being used, you may want to do this before the test, hope this helps.

That means you have a failure somewhere in the system (Powertrain, Chassis, Body, Network). Just because the engine was serviced doesn't mean anything. You need to have the diagnostic codes pulled to determine what is causing the light to be triggered. Then correct the problem and the light will go out. If you just erase the light or code it wont solve anything.
