SOURCE: white smoke

Hi,

Sounds typical of head gasket failure.

With this you get oil into cylinders / water into cylinders, burning oil, loosing water - but no leaks. "boiling" of radiator and overflows.

Check your coolant and oil levels - they will be low.

Get a few quotes for a head gasket replacement - and timing belt change, as it has to come off when you do this anyway & no sense putting an old one on - they often snap if retensioned.

If this solves your problem, please take a moment to rate as Fixya! thanks.

SOURCE: my truck blows white smoke

Hello!
There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).
Good Luck

SOURCE: white smoke from exhaust

Hello;
The white smoke is from coolant entering the combustion chamber(s). Coolant can enter through the water passages sealed bu the head gasket. You have probably blown a head gasket. You should check your coolant level. You may have acracked head if you continue to drive it and overheat. The temp gauge only reads when exposed to coolant, not air. Take out thhe spark plugs and look them over. A white glossy apperance will indicate water in the combustion chamber. You may need to surface the head once you have it removed so that it is flat. Hope this helps.
Thanks;

SOURCE: 2000 TDI - Lots of white smoke at cold start.

Sounds like your injection pump timing is off, an injector is leaking or a bad seal on your IP.
VW dealers have a horrible reputation when it comes to TDI's. Check out the posts over at www.tdiclub.com Those guys are very knowledgeable - and the first thing they'll tell you is don't take it to a dealer.
You can probably find someone in your area that has a copy of Vag-Com (scantool software that vw uses) software that could look at your timing. It definitely sounds like your dealer was throwing parts at your car because they didn't know what your problem is. If I were you, I'd copy and paste your post from here over at www.tdiclub.com

Hello,

Black smoke is usually a sign of the accelerator pump set wrong, a choke plate could be partially closed and it could also be a really clogged air filter. If you pulled the air filter and the car turned on with no problems then replace it as this is one of the reasons for black smoke. It's not often a gas vehicle blows black smoke. The vehicle is starving for air.

ALOT OF SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST

Blue smoke is oil and means you have internal engine damage.
White smoke with a sweet smell means you have a blown head gasket (check antifreeze, if it's low that is another sign)
White smoke with no real smell is water in the gas tank. Grab some water remover.
Black smoke is a sign your burning to much gas, you need a tune up.

White smoke and the smell of burning rubber. I have had lots maintenance of work done to my car. I was starting to notice and smell burn oil. I had a small valve cover leak so I just had the whole...

Bradley,
You have stated two problems. Coming to second first. Smell of burning rubber. in the car rubber is only at two places where it can burn, The tyres, unlikely as you have not commented upon your driving habits. Some people like to rev the engine so much before take off that the tyres go burning for the first few hundred meters. And then there is rubber on the wires and cables. You have to check the wires for any heat while the engine is running.
Coming to the first now. White smoke is generally of unburnt fiel and not oil. Oil alwayd give black smoke and that is the indication you get when the exhaust is giving black smoke. That means that the engine is consuming oil. if it is white then that indicates that the engine is cold and burning more gas/diesel. Is your a diesel vehicle?? But as you say it from under the hood. And that too behind the engine block. May be that the gasket is leaking from somewhere. If you could check the engine oil level for a few days early in the morning before starting the engine. If the level drops and the exhaust tail pipe does not blacken your finger when you rub it in it would mean that the oil is being burnt. Now what I suggest is that with the engine running and hand brakes on, go under the car with hood open and try to locate the source of the smoke. I am sure you would be able to locate it.
Then we talk again.

Black smoke coming from my 97 Toyota corolla

The black smoke is a sign of excessive gasoline not burning completely, there is a wide range of probabilities that may be causing this to happen my best advise would be to have it diagnosed with a scanner, otherwise you could spend a lot of money replacing "probable" malfunctioning parts till you find the one that was broken (eg: EGR valve, MAF, coils, injectors, etc.) good luck
