Puffs of smoke coming out of the steering column

I have a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix SE and puffs of smoke are coming out of the steering column. I was told the problem may be dust getting in there and burning up. What could be causing that?

This is a defective igntion switch, replace it, that is not the key cylinder but the actual switch.

Use hand signals until this is fixed. Possibly contact your car insurance about Electrical fire and comprehensive coverage. A fuse should have broke before the column smoked, there is nothing preventing a fire now.

They should want to fix this before the whole car burns up.

Steering wheel smoke?

They will find the problem if they take it apart. Could be the airbag, horn, any controls on the steering column. It sounds like it may have some burnt wiring.

The SE and LE indicate opinions on the cars. Most of the parts will interchange. When doing engine changes, the best way is to swap the ECM also.

1992 Pontiac Grand Prix Problem

The horn wire is grounding out inside the column. Probably got pinched or a little insulation stripped. You will have to trace the wire thru the column or just replace it.
