I have a 92 vw cabriolet it ran great until I unplugged the O2 sensor

Have you checked fuel pressure? How about spark on all 6 cylinders? Maybe a coil?

First, you should Make sure that is the problem. Usually if your filter is clogged enough to kill the car, if you wait 10 to 15 minutes the car will restart. The fuel will eventually seep thru the filter. You more likely have a relay or fuel pump problem if it is fuel. Try removing the air filter and spraying carb cleaner into the intake, if it is a fuel problem, it will start. If it is a spark problem it will not. Most vehicles have a filter inline about half-way between the tank and the engine underneath the car. If you jack the car, trace the 2 lines from the fuel tank tds. the engine. There will probably be a cover to protect the filter.

Try cleaning throttle body with throttle body cleaning fluid. You can pick this up at any auto supply depot. Just follow the instructions on the spray.
