98 monte carlo won't exceed 3000 rpms

I have a 98 monte carlo that does the same thing, along with other symptoms, I'm really stumped as to what the issue is.

A few questions for you, If you stomp the gas does it misfire sooner?
Are you getting any codes?

How can I test the MAF?

  • kruqnut Sep 16, 2009

I tested it with the DVOM, I went to the orange or red wire and it was at 4.5V at idle, steadily decreasing to 4.0 v at 2500 RPM.

I'm pretty sure this is a fuel delivery problem, not allowing the engine to get enough fuel above 3000 RPM. When driving at 60 MPH I can't get much over 2k rpm, If I floor the gas real quick it acts like there isn't enoughn fuel or something in order to combust properly and immediately misfires and sounds like its going to die, then if I hold the gas it constantly misfires, If I let off the gas it will catch again and idle fine.

I checked my fuel pressure and replaced my fuel filter, all that seems to be fine.

Is my MAF not dropping voltage enough under load or what?

Well both of you should look at the MAF sensor. It reads the air volume of the itake and adjusts the fuel accordingly. No air, No fuel, See if that helps

It appears your Maf is dropping out at higher RPM s - The voltage should climb as the intake air volume and speed increases, not drop. The sensor can be cleaned with crc electrical spray cleaner only. Do'nt rub or brush the sensor and let it air dry, no compressed air . I think we got it. The sensor is in thei ntake ducting to the engine. Look in yhe metal tube sections and you will see it. Remember, don'y touch it and wssh as clean as you can with the CRC - Ned_

If the brake pedal goes to the floor you need a new mastercylinder so have that changed and bleed the brake system, that should fix your brake problem.

My 1997 monte carlo z34 3.4 engin is holding high rpms

I had a similar problem on a 3.4 Lumina Z34. It was a leaking intake gasket. Be careful with the plastic vaccumn lines as they will get brittle.

Irratic idle

did you bleed the air out of the cooling system? They are bad for air locks, Also is the check engine light on? Sounds like maybe a sensor left unplugged
