Just a guess - the switch function is probably to tell the brain there is sufficient fluid pressure. If there is insufficient pressure or the switch or wiring is faulty a warning light is likely to switch on...
When turning the wheels tight, like a tight parking spot, the pressure switch sends a command to the control module to idle up the engine speed to both prevent stalling and assist power boost .
Yes if this switch is shorted out or just finished it will make the light come on do you feel like the steering is a little bit more resistant then before this is possible also make sure your fluid level is in the right spot when cold it expands when hot and will give a full or close to full reading but less pressure and the switch is sensing it illuminating the light

Is the fluid full enough? there should be a dipstick to tell where the level should be. Also is the belt tight enough? Wires loose?
SOURCE: replace rear brake light bulb 1998 lincoln continental
pop the trunk and right behind where the lights are pull the carpet
down and their will be of the following depending on the trim.
You will either see the light sockets themselves that you can twist and pull to change the bulb, or you will see the plastic nuts/screws that you can remove to remove the entire assembly in order to access the bulbs.
If it's your 3rd brake light, the screws to access the housing are located in the upper part of the trunk
SOURCE: What causespower steering assist light come on in
the hydraulic fluid is too low more than likely.
Consult the owners manual on where to refill it and what fluid to use to fill it with,
Power steering is a hydraulic system and fluid getting finished is normal.
