I am getting a rattling sound in the front engine area when i pull away,it is louder when on an uphill grade or turning.The axels and rotors are fine. Mechanic says it might be a clutch bearing,but he is not sure,any ideas?The car is a 2004 maxima

That whole deals sounds fishy. Brake job should be about $100 depending on parts. That part about needing to replace axle to replace ball joints doesn't sound right. I've been a diesel mechanic for 30 yrs and bought, drove and fixed used cars a bunch. Not that specific one, but plenty of them. Get another opinion.
Sounds like one of your CV joints is bad. There are CV joints (constant velocity) on drive axels, that have a rubber boot over them. If boot has torn and grease leaks out they start to rattle and get consistently louder. Have a reputable shop or dealer address it.
The rattling is a worn-out timing chain (rattling should be louder at one end of the engine). Get it changed now - they will eventually break, closely followed by your bank balance!
no it would not be the timing belt making a rattling noise it couldn possible be you heat shield around your break rotor it could be someting having to do with ur suspenion like a spring maybe what kind of rattling noise? or a regular heat shield but loose in that particular area
Check all the bolts and fastenings for the heat shrouds around the exhaust manifold to make sure they are there (and firm). If you can undo them without snapping them, take the shrouds off to check for gravel trapped in that area. It could also be a failing cat converter, but a lot less likely. My next step would be to remove the rocker cover and have a look......
Could be carbon build-up on the pistons, causing erratic flame travel in the combustion chamber... 'pinging'...... Decarbon the engine and use a high grade fuel for a few tanks.... also an octane booster can help
