High pitched whine seems to be linked to the brake pedal

I have a 2005 Xterra that has the exact same problem and set of circumstances as this Pathfinder. Does anyone have any ideas?

I appreciate that but I don't think that's my problem. The whine comes from inside the car under the driver side dash. The whine goes away when I put my foot under the brake pedal and push up. However the whine will continue after I have stopped the vehicle and shut it down. It will eventually "wind down" or I can stop it by applying the above brake pedal procedure. Any idea?

This is the Pathfinder thread and problem I was referring to:http://www.fixya.com/cars/t2933164-high_...

Yes. I don't see anything amiss. I looked more closely at the brake pedal itself and there are two actuators (?) that push against the pedal when it's in it's neutral non-applied position. I have no idea if they're connects to the noise or not but when I push up on the pedal the front most switch is applied just a little bit more than the back. In short I dunno what the issue is. Neither does my Nissan dealer at least not over the phone. I'm afraid to take it in because I know that it will be a fortune in diagnosis.

Can we post pics on here some how? I'd like to attach a pic of the brake pedal area and the two actuators that I mentioned. I don't see the "can" that the gentleman with the Pathfinder mentioned and I don't see a fan housing either. It's possible that the noise is coming from further up under the dash though and that I'm looking in the wrong place.

Have you looked up under the dash?

I am currently having the same problem in my 2005 Ford Escape. Did you find the problem? My father seems to think it might be the brake light switch. I am taking the car to the dealership to get it fixed and I would like to tell them exactly the problem if you have already found the solution.

Did you find out what caused the whine? My Escape does it too. Stops when brake is tapped or applied.

The whine is caused by a warning scraper that scrapes the brake rotor when the pads need to be replaced this avoids costly damage to the rotor

I believe the can under the dash could be a recirc fan

the brake pedal lever may be hitting the can just enough to cause the fan blades to scrape the inside of the can

Vibrates when hard braking

Sounds like your front brake rotors are warped. You will either need to have them turned back straight on a brake lathe or have them replaced.

Service engine soon indicator on and a buzzing/whining noise.

i recommend that you take it into auto-zone or a car shop asap. from what you have described the ticking as, it sounds like a bottom knock. as for the whine i don't know.

High pitched electronic/dentist drill sound when accelerating.

Probably the front differential, your probably hearing the famous differential gear whine. Change the oil, put Lucas for gears in it. You can get a hand operated oil pump to **** it out through the dip stick if it has one. Then fill it with the recommended amount.

Weird noises in drive and reverse

The high pitched whine in reverse sounds normal for a honda. Ever honda I have had makes a similar noise while in reverse. The spinning, scraping noise in drive is not normal. You might want to see a mechanic about that.

High Pitch whine during acceleration

Hi Pullerwife,

I have a few suggestions for you,

First of all, check your air filter, make sure its clean, not clogged, and doesn't need to be changed.

I don't know how handy you are, but if you are fairly handy, check the idler pulley bearings, if your not, have a shop check it out, as a last resort.

Power steering pump/fluid being low is also a possibility, but thats usually more of a lower pitched whine then what you describe.

You say once the vehicle is warmed up, the whining stops. Does Weather seem to be a factor as well?

Hope I've helped, and don't forget to rate.
