I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan SE 2.4L 4 cylinder motor. I had the transmission flushed almost 2 years ago and since then have put 12,000 plus miles on it. All I know is you are suppost to check the transmission fluid while the car is running and idling at normal temps. When between warm and hot you are not suppost to add any fluid. I also know that it is very critical not to add to much transmission fluid. However this is my problem. While running and idling in park at normal operating temperature I pull the transmission dip stick out and dont see anything on it at all (no fluid). When I shut the motor down and pull the transmission dip stick out it is just barely over the add line. Finally if I let it sit over night and check the transmission fluid level when the motor is cold then the dipstick has brown/orange fluid on it??? How do I change transmission fluid? Can I do it myself? Do I need a shop to do it? Could I add fluid instead of flushing and replacing?

You need to, at the minimum, change the fluid & trans filter. Easy proceedure. With van jacked up & blocked so it won't fall, use a large collection tray under trans pan & remove pan bolts. let oil drain into tray. use screwdriver to pry pan off. clean pan thoroughly & trans matting surface. Remove filter. You may need to adjust low rev band. Check with dealer or parts store for proper clearances. Put new filter on & tighten bolt[s]. Use new gasket & rebolt pan. Use gasket sealer on pan side only. You'll need 4-8 qts. of the proper tranny oil. Fill through trans. filler hole. Start engine & let warm up, check level & don't overfill or you'll have to suction out until level.

My 2002 Dodge Caravan SE (2.4L) doesn't want to kick into gears

Automatic transmissions can fail at any mileage. First thing you need to do is check the fluid level, make sure the transmission is full, also check the condition of the fluid, burnt odor, strong varnish smell, or signs of contamination. If the level is correct, and the fluid is red in color, without any strong odors, you may have some type of valvebody issue, however, given my experience, these transmissions are prone for failure around this mileage.
