Very often the cause of coolant being expelled from the reservoir is due to a faulty head gasket leaking compression air into the water jackets. When the engine stops circulating the coolant, with the water pump, the bubbles collect together in the radiator as they rise to the top. Then the hot compressed air passes through the pressure relief valve (often radiator cap) and enters the reservoir, thereby blowing coolant out of the overflow tube.

SOURCE: 2004 VW Bug leaking antifreeze. small puddles

the VW beetle has a plastic radiator, where the cap is if you look to the front of that it does a 90, it is cracked there. Here is the fun part, with a throx wrench ( I think it was a T-30) take apart the fenders and front bumper. At the auto parts store there is a plastic tank repair kit, the kit includes resign, fiber glass cloth, and a stick. You will need to rough up the crack as it is right where it angles and lay on the cloth and resign. Let it dry and it will not leak from there again. Good Luck Tim

SOURCE: I have a leak near the driver side, coolant leaks out . could it be the waterpump?

Yes that would likely be the water pump, when you do the water pump you will need to replace the valve timing belt as well, Please watch the video for detailed help with the whole job. From a YouTube Video.

The sensor in the tank is probably bad. If you overfill the tank it will come out the overflow when your car warms up. You may also have a leak in a hose or radiator tank.

I have a ticking sound while driving as if a stone is stuck in my tire, i checked the tires and there's nothing stuck in them, any ideas what it could be?

If the noise is coming from the front it could be a wheel bearing. If you change lanes and the noise stops for a second or two thats a good indication.

Slight coolant leak.

If the leak is on the passenger side then most likely it is the water pump. Leak would appear about 12 inches in from right tire. How many miles? Did you replace the timing and other belts at 90,000 miles? Water pump should be replace then too.
If coolant leak is near head light, could be just overflow from coolant overflow tank.
This model had many large and small hoses that can crack and leak. If you can not find specific location then you need to take ti to a mechanic right away. It might be a small problem now that can be fixed easily. Latter, a hose could break and leave you stranded.

Hi I have a 1996 grand prix SE 3.1L engine. Its leaking a good amount of coolant, mostly from around the the back of the engine. I look under the car and can see also little driplets along the...

Yes, the pump is on passenger side. But when car is moving, the coolant that leaked can get blown all over, so you need to check carefully. Use rags to wipe off all the coolant you can see, then when more leaks out, maybe you can see where it comes from.
The noise on driver's side might be coolant boiling inside the engine. Be careful it doesn't overheat, or you will be doing the gasket job again.
On the backside of the engine (near the firewall), a couple of possibilities: the heater hoses are there, so check them for leaks. Also on the engine block, about halfway up the block, there are 3 or 4 freeze plugs, spaced evenly along the engine (also on the front side of the engine-the same freeze plugs. Check if any of these are leaking. Use a flashlight and maybe get under the engine to look around-be careful if you have to raise the car-don't trust a jack, but use blocks or jack stands.. The freeze plugs are round metal plugs about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, and pressed into the block. You can see or feel them. They can be punched out and new ones pushed in. But make sure you have one that is leaking before attempting that.
Good luck, Joe.

The engine coolant level/temperature light came on in my 2007 volks. jetta..where do I put the coolant?

You put the coolant into the large plastic circular shaped reservoir with the large black plastic cap, near the firewall at the back of the engine, on the drivers side.

But it is very serious that you do not know where to put coolant, because that means it has never been checked.
Once it is over heated, then the thermostat also needs to be replaced.
You must also find out why it is low, since it should never be allowed to leak at all.
You need to perform a coolant system pressure check, with what is basically a pump that you replace the cap with.
You over pressurize it and watch for leaks that allow pressure to drop.
Then you start the engine, rev it up, and check for head gasket leaks that would cause pressure to oscillate.
The coolant light should never come on, and it is possibly very serious.

I have a leak on the back of the engine a large hose goes back there but I can not see the connection and don't know for sure if it is the hose leaking.

Some of this below I wrote to another person and copy/pasted it here so it directs to the water pump incase that's your issue. If your leak is on the driver's side of the engine read the last paragraph, if not... maybe you have a ruptured radiator hose that connects to the block below your distributor. Another hose is the obvious one in front that goes from the top of the radiator to the head. In the back of the engine there's a hose that runs coolant to your heater core and another hose that returns the coolant back to your motor. Those are smaller hoses than the 2 main ones.

Do you need a new water pump, the bearing might have went out in it and it has a "weep hole" that lets the coolant near the driver's side front tire (on the engine block) out to let you know what happened, rattling is a good indicator too. Change the timing belt2.gif at the same time and you'll be good for the next 125k miles. Don't drive it any more or you will possibly warp the head or ruin the head gasket. The cost is about $350. for all around here in central Ohio, don't know where you are but hopefully it's not more than that. If you try to do this yourself you will also want to learn how to set the timing. Good luck.
