There is a cover on the back of the gearbox, Remove the cover and wedge 5th gear and reverse off the shaft. One that is done you must remove all the bolts around the bell housing. It might be that the 2 casings stick to each other because of the sealer used to seal the gearbox. The casings should slide off once the sealer has lifted.

How to change automatic transmission filter of 2001 Golf

You need to remove the sump pan off the gearbox but what looks like a drain plug on the sump is actually a gearbox filler level tube. You may also find a drain plug on the torque converter. Remove the sump pan and you will find the filter screwed to the bottom of the valve body The problem you will face is filling the gearbox oil to achieve the correct level a computer is needed to measure gearbox oil temperature. With the gearbox oil at 30 centigrade you need one drip out of the filler level every 10 seconds.

VW GOLF 1.4 1999 S. Gearbox makes whining sound at idle. once clutch is pressed sound goes. car drives fine with no noise in 1st-4th gears. unable to select 5th gear.. just grinds and wont engage. VW Golf...

No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.

1988 golf 1.3 gearbox/clutch funny sound?

First check the oil level in the gearbox. The noise you hear sounds as though the pressure plate of the clutch is faulty. If every time you press the clutch pedel the noise goes away it points to the clutch. If this model has a manual clutch cable adjuster, try and adjust it to see if there is any inprovement.
