2006 Jeep Commander Intermittent Starting Problems

2006 Jeep Commander - sometimes I will turn the key and nothing happens - all of the instrument panel lights come on, radio comes on and fan blows but no start. The engine doesn't turn over - just nothing. I will have to turn the key several times to get it to start and sometimes will have to wait a few minutes before retrying.

Common problem in snow country where salt water can corrode starter parking gate wire connection at started tab. Just cleanthe connector and tab, coat in dielectric grease, problem solved in 15 minutes!

Seems to make sense as our problem (2006 Commander) started in snow country, followed by car washes and more salt and snow. We just had our Jeep towed to our dealer, who thought it was the battery. (which reads 12.45 volts.) Where is the "starter parking gate" connection?
Thank you, hope you are right!

I have the same problem, live in ohio and have replaced my battery to make sure that wasn't the issue. I have noticed if i have the doors shut and wait for the dvd for the nav system to stop reading and then turn the key and hold it, with in 2 or 3 seconds it kicks in and starts like normal. Would love to know what is causing this. I have read a lot of other posts where drivers have replaced the starters but still didn't help.

Check (in order) battery connections (must be clean on contact surfaces and secure) starter relay, ignition switch (power in, power out with key turned to start), starter (12volts at main terminal all times, 12v at trigger wire with key turned to start) and neutral safety switch.(power in, power out key turned to start). Tests can be done with a test light but I prefer a volt meter because it not only tells me power is there, but how much.
Likely your problem is at the battery connection.

battery connection is good, new battery 2 days before repeat ptoblem. Headlights are bright when turning the key to start.

2006 jeep commander makes a clicking noise when I turn ignition, all lights and radio come on but car won't turnover, what is it?

I have had this issue 2 times, both times it was the battery having damaged/dead cells. You can sometimes get it to start by putting your foot on the break, turning the key to the on position, putting the car in neutral then starting it. I purchased my Commander new in 2006 and have had to replace the battery 2 times since, both times this was the initial symptom. I have 120K miles and still love my Commander

Jeep commander clicks once and won't start. It is

The starting issue is the same I had on my 2005 Grand Cherokee. The wire coming from the ignition (key area) to the Starter the connection is bad. The shop replaced the lead and it is perfectly fine... it cost $70. I dont know the techincal terms.. but it was easy to fix- the problem is water and junk gets splashed up by the front tire and corroded the wire into the sarter.... that's all it was.
Good luck.

2003 GMC Intermittent Starting Problem

Check the other end of battery cables, may have good connection at battery but not at starter or ground. (Always check ground first, often a source of problems.)

Next time it happens, try hooking up jumper cables and see if the intrument panel lights up.

Also, check for loose fuse, not properly seated fuse. And cables to fuse block. (That model may have more than one fuse block)

Intermittent Starting Problem

My 2007 Commander never stalled while running, but every couple weeks would fail to start. Turn the key and nothing would happen. After a couple hours or overnight it would always start again with no errors recorded. First time they replaced the shift box (auto) thinking the system was not showing in park. Second time they did nothing. Third time they replaced the keys and fob module thinking it wasn't being recognized. Fourth time it finally wouldn't start at the dealer either and they replaced the starter. So far so good and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Dave
