Recently purchased Grandma's 2000 Chevy Malibu. Sharp car. Only 90,000 miles. Never exposed to salt (Tennessee). It sat (unused) for about 9 months, before I bought it, though...
During the trip from TN to OH, the temp guage started climbing, but didn't lose coolant. Once w/ me, in OH, temp guage rose & coolant kept leaking enough to cause low coolant light to come on. Before I actually recieved the car, my uncle gave it a quick tune-up. He flushed the radiator, changed the oil, replaced plugs and wires, and topped off the fluids.
The first day I had it, I took it to my mechanic, so he could look into the overheating issue. He noticed bad bearing in water pump. He performed some sort of pressure test, and discovered a bad intake manifold gasket.
He replaced the thermostat, intake manifold gasket, water pump, v-belt, radiator cap & hose, and changed the oil.
Since then (3 days ago), my check engine light keeps lighting. Codes pulled have been MISFIRE-CYL3, TPS-LOW VOLT, and EVAP SYS CONT. The only one that has repeated itself is MISFIRE-CYL3 (3 times, in 2 days).
I purchased the car for next to nothing, but have now spent just as much on repairs! I wouldn't mind putting a little more money into it, but don't know where to go from here!
Any ideas?
Have the DIS module checked and the coil pack for cyl 3. If either/both of those need replaced, have it done and have the codes cleared. Then see if it clears the others.
You may need a TPS (throttle position sensor) as well.
