There's a special socket with a **** in it to remove the O2 sensor without cutting the wire(s). I would just cut the wire(s) near the sensor and use a box end wrench after spraying some penetrating oil on it and letting it soak in for a few hours. Follow the wires back to the connector and unplug them. Put some antiseize compound on the threads of the new one and screw it in, then plug the wiring connector together. I've even replaced one with nothing more than a crescent wrench, but be carefull not to round the sides of the sensor unless you have vicegrips standing by.

I have a 1990 Buick Skylark, I am having problems with it backfiring in the throttle body and also have low gas mileage. I am only getting about 13 miles to the gallon. I have changed to plugs and wires....

What motor does it have? If it is the quad four, you probably need to replace everything under the cover. If it is the 2.5, check your firing order/timing.

Running rough or fast

If both the MAF and 02 have been replaced, try the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) also check for vacuum leaks. the hoses that come out of the throttle body are very vulnerable to melt from heat.
