Once in a while my 2003 gmc safari will not start. i turn the key, here a click but engine will not crank. I wait for a while then starts normally. van has only 35,000 miles. could starter be bad already?

Could be bad starter. Miles don't matter, only how many times you start the car. I would first check for corroded or loose connections between battery and starter solenoid..

I know EXACTLY what your talking about... its the starter.. my truck did that, but i never fixed it.. i would always just turn the key on and off real quick and after 5-20 clicks it would start
IF BATTERY CABLES CLEAN AND TIGHT.STARTER AND SOLENOID GOOD.SEE IF YOU SEE THEFT LIGHT ON WHILE KEY IN RUN POSITION.IF SECURITY LIGHT ON YOUR CAR IS IN THEFT SECURITY MODE.TRY ANOTHER KEY.PUT IN IGNITION FOR 10 MINUTES IN RUN POSITION WITH ENGINE OFF.WHEN SECURITY LIGHT TURN OFF. TURN OFF IGNITION SWITCH .WAIT 5 SECONDS TRY CRANKING TRUCK.IF STILL DONT CRANK.HAVE TRUCK HOOK UP TO A SCANNER TO CHECK FOR THEFT SECURITY MODE FAULT.
Replace the FUEL PUMP RELAY. Its located in the under hood relay center. This relay primes the pump with the key on, about 2 seconds, then the pump will not run until the engine has oil pressure, then the fuel pump is energized.
check for signal at starter when key is turned signal is the small terminal.no sound doesnt eliminate the starter as the problem if you have no signal chek the clutch safty switch if it fails truck wont start
Theft light on indicates a problem with passlock. You have a problem
with the key or ignition switch. When I worked I replaced a lot of
ignition switches, so i would say that would be your problem.
Give this a try it might work for you........
When you put the key in ignition, turn it on (not to crank) dos the
security light start flashing? If so, you need to either wait 15
minutes or wait with the key on until it stops flashing. Once it stops
flashing, try to start again. You should get to try it 2 times before
the passlock will lock up again.
I have a 2002 Safari with around 220k miles. I went out of town for several days and when I came back it would not start. I eventually got it started after about an hour. This happened again when I did not driver it for a week. This time I could not start the van. The fuel pump was spinning and it was getting gas. I took off the engine couling inside the van and inspected the rotor and cap. They were completely corroded. I put in an after market set for less than 30 bucks and the van started right up. I plan on getting the wires and plugs replaced but I don't think I want to do that myself due to tight access. Good luck.
I need a little more info, does it spin and not start or does it not spin over at all. If it spins over, check to see if the fuel pump is running. If you have someone turn the key on (do not turn to start) and listen at the fuel filler with the cap off you should here a low humming noise for 2-3 seconds indicating the fuel pump is running. If you hear nothing the pump is not suppling fuel to the engine, it's a common failure on this vehicle.
My 1997 safari was doing the same. After being shut off for a short period of time it started as if it was flooded. If I put the accelerator to the floor it would fire up. As well, I had no engine codes to report. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and everything is great. It was leaking fuel into the engine causing it to act flooded when starting. Once started, the computer system made adjustments for the leaking fuel so the engine ran fine. If you turn the van off and immediately try to start it, it should fire up. (don't give it time to leak extra fuel into the engine)
