I would look in the owners manual and check the fuses for the guage cluster.
also take the vehicle to a local parts store and they should be able to check the codes for you so that you can narrow down the problem.
and if the light goes on for a few days then goes off you might want to check that your fuel cap is tight.
The m.i.l. will come on for lots of reasons but in my exp. if the car is running fine and you have oil pressure and its not over-heating that you wont damage the car by driving home.
its either time for tuneup if haven't done one meaning oil change, spark plugs air filter, check ur fluids make sure their topped off, and or make sure ur gas cap is on tight. 80% of time its gas cap not on tight...
it sounds more like that old adage....how long is the piece of string.... i don't think you can ever predict if something will last longer than others, you might buy the hybrid and drive off the forecourt only to have it brake down 2 miles up the road, and vice versa with the normal civic,or they could be looking at 10000000 miles.. they are to be honest just as good as each other, obviously the hybrid is better for the environment and cheaper running cost, but just as all honda's they are both very reliable, i truly think you should toss that coin of fate and see what side it lands, either way your a winner..hope this helps...sorta lol
Hello Michael. While your fuel cap may still be an issue there are many other items that may be at fault. It's possible the fuel cap tightening is a coincidence and something else is causing the problem. There are a few hundred possibilities that could turn on your MIL. First thing that needs to be done is verify what the code is that turns on the light. If you are in the USA Autozone will give you a free scan to start you off. Then you can begin to home in on the problem. Best of the festive season to you.
one you have the diagnostics done you will havbe your answer as there any number of things that can and will activate the check engine light from low oil to loose gas cap to a bad ABS pump/comtrol module or even wheel speed sensors.
1. Bad fuel mix.. or no fuel.
2. Bad Air & Gas compression. (air and gas intake to the cylinders are not proportionate)
3. Poor spark plugs or poor electric wiring to engine (nothing to ignite the compressed mix)
There are thousands of other reasons why a car don't start, but the above mentioned are the most common and critical.
