?tappet noise on 2000 996 cab - on run off in 3rd or 4th

There was a ticking sounding like a tappet noise and when Porsche looked at it they said that it was the vraiable valeve timing units sticking and put new ones in. Now instead of a single "tick" it sounds like all of the tappetys are clicking - only happens on coastui downhill in 4th mainly but cant hear it when accelerating (maybe exhaust a bit loud). Porsche have taken the manifolds off, head off and camshafts out to replace timing units so should have seen anything else(??) - any ideas what this may be. Oil pressure is fine and always has been -starts on 5 when cold and then on tick over goes down to just under 3 on dash gauge(I know this is not the most reliable) btut has not changed prior to the noise to now Thanks Simon

I have a Kia 2008 model it's making noise but when l askmachainc tells me it's tappet. Hw do l know when it's tappet

Lifters and tappets are the same thing. A mechanic can tell from the sound and the location. They are adjustable in some cases and are prone to wear that causes the ticking sound.

Ticking noise on passenger side of mazda b3000 truck

Valves and tappets make that sound when not getting enough oil. When you drive there's more oil pressure and the valves/tappets get enough oil. Of course road noise could be drowning out the sound and the valve noise could still be there.

Hi sir madam I got a getz and theirs a sound coming from the front not sure is it the tensioner or the tappets how can i digonoise

Tappets usually make a 'clicking/ticking' noise which comes from the top of the engine.

A tensioner or pulley/belt tends to make a constant whirring/squealing noise.

What is the tappet settings on a 1200 toyota corolla 1980 model bakkie

It will be the same as for the 1200 on any other Toyota, i.e. Pulsar etc. If you have 10 thou on the intake and 13 thou on the exhaust set while hot, you are withing range.
We used to say a ticking tappet is a happy tappet, so don't try to eliminate all noise from the tappets, just set them so they don't kill all conversation in the cab.

There was knocking and ticking i put in 3quarts oil and 1 pint tranny fluid knocking disappeared ticking lessened by 70%. still ticking until gear reaches 4th gear.

The ticking is the hydaulic tappets refilling with oil, best advice is take the car for a good run and let the temperature get up on the engine, if the ticking is still there then a lack of oil has caused damage to the tappets, and most likely it will continue to make that noise, you can replace them cheaply enough if you do it yourself, but its not a jobv for a novice.

Hope this helps
regards
dan

p.s it could run like that for 20k miles, it shouldt damage anything just a bit annoying

There is a whistling ticking noise coming from my engine while running. What are some things that could possibly cause this.

Whistling can be caused by vacuum leaks. look for hoses and tubes to be cracked or broken. The tick may be the sound of the injectors working or valve noise. more info needed.

2003 Ford Ranger ticking noise, not a ping or knock. It is coming from the engine.

THE ticking noise coming from the engine ..is it just a 1 tick on idle at about each rev of engine,,and does it make any differance to the running of engine ,,Does it get softer when it gets warmer.
As it sounds like a loose tappet and being a oil adjusted tappets this thought of thing does come in now and again. and the best thing to do is to get a small plastic tube 25mm (or 1' ) and 2ft long and put it to your ear and listen at the top of the rocker cover ans see if the noise gets louder in a certen place ,as you will hear it if it is there..
Other wise it could be a Small end on the conrod which the piston is connected to.... lets hope not.
So let me know as soon as poss the answers to all the above. Ron
