I have a faulty Bosch 5.7 ABS control unit, model number 4BO614917 on a 2004 VW Passat. The dealer has quoted about 1000 GBP for a replacement part. Can I get it repaired cheaper?

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must have the security anti-theft code for your VW radio from the car manufacturer, or from a VW dealer! You can find the radio code at: http://www.radio-code.co.uk/
The sequence of programming for a 1999 VW Passat radio is: 1. Simultaneously push "SCAN" and "RDS" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed. 2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDS" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt. For example: we have the security code "5079". Then: 3. By the no.# 1 key you will set up the first safe code digit. Push 5 times on the no.# 1 button. The "5" number will be setted. 4. By the no.# 2 key you will set up the second safe code digit. Push 10 times on the no.# 2 button. The "0" number will be setted. 5. By the no.# 3 key you will set up the third safe code digit. Push 7 times on the no.# 3 button. The "7" number will be setted. 6. By the no.# 4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit. Push 9 times on the no.# 4 button. The "9" number will be setted. 7. Then simultaneously push again "SCAN" and "RDS" keys to confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed. The radio is now ready to use!
The ABS system means the Anti-lock Brake System. If the ABS lights on the dashboard permanently the ABS system is faulty. You must access the ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory to pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ABS ECU, in other words reset the ABS system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.

The only 2 methods I know of to obtain coding for any control unit (and they both require the use of a code reader) are to either read the coding from the old unit, or to code the unit online, but this method can only be done at a VW dealership.
You didnt say why you need the coding, the only reason to require this is if you have replaced the ABS control unit.
The ABS control unit is failing, this is a very common issue with the 98 and 99 model Passats. You will need to have the ABS control unit replaced. You can now purchase the ABS control unit by itself but it is still pricey. Depending on which pump you have will determine which control unit you need to get. The run around $600 - $750.00 plus labor to install. The control unit needs to be installed by some one with a factory type scanner, as the new unit will need to be coded for that vehicle.
