No. The balancer can be pulled off from the crank with no problem. It's the main pulley on the engine. It has a big bolt at the center that holds the pulley onto the crank, that bolt needs to come off. Then the pulley (harmonic balancer) can come off.

SOURCE: Pulley location on Pontiac 301 Harmonic Balancer

Haven't laid eyes on one of those for a really long time!!! If you can't get info. you can do it the really "non technical way": stand next to it and eyeball the pulleys...Especially with the belts on, it's easy to tell if you have them aligned properly (don't have to tighten them up, just enough so they are in straight lines.) You would be surprised at how accurate your eyes are!!!

Testimonial: "Thanks for your answer. 159ft-lbs seems a bit high. I only say this because 1990 Honda Integra 1.8L is 130ft-lbs. Maybe because of bigger engine."

SOURCE: I need to replace the harmonic balance seal.

THE thread is a std Left hand to undo But you will need a 3/4 drive100 lbs air rattle gun to both undo and redo up the bolt on front pully.. BUT there is another way and that is as you say a big breaker bar and a good socket, but you will have to take off the starter motor and put a good fitting bar into the starter ring teeth and turn it to the top and dont let it slip out of the teeth and once locked into place gently put pressure on and undo the bolt..
But its unusual for the seal to leak on its own as its mostly due to either the front pully has worn a grove in it or the crankshaft bearing is also worn, so check the front pully for wear first. Ron

Testimonial: "This is good advice. Pretty much along the lines of what I was going to do but it is good to get confirmation from someone who knows. Cheers"

You're best bet to get a full shop manual for this car is going to be on eBay Daihatsu Workshop Manual eBay

To get just the harmonic balancer off you will need a heavy duty gear puller; they do make harmonic balancer pullers but a really good gear puller will work just as well. Whatever you do, don't try prying it off with a bar, or hitting it with a hammer; you'll either damage the crankshaft or the balancer or possibly both.
It's also a lot easier to do when the motor is out of the car; you'll need a lot of room to work getting it off.
Back to the balancer; take all of the belts off, loosen the bolt in the center of the balancer (you will need to lock the flywheel so the crank doesn't turn when you try to loosen the bolt). Once it's loosened, take it out a couple of turns, but no more than that, attach the puller and start pulling it off, once you see it move, you can take the puller off, remove the bolt, you should be able to pull it off by hand now; if not, reattach the puller, and finish pulling it off. There is a little "guide pin" in the crankshaft called the Woodruff Key, you'll want to take it out and inspect to see if it shows any wear, or distortions, if so, replace it. Leave it out until you're ready to reinstall the balancer; it's how the balancer lines up with (and holds it in place) crankshaft. This is not a job for a beginner.

1999 Ford Taurus. Can see crankshaft spinning fine coming out of block. Nut on end holding harmonic balanced spinning fine too. Harmonic balancer doesn't spin. How to fix? Do I need to pull the engine to...

There is a key way in the crankshaft and the balancer with a woodruff key that keeps it locked in place. The woodruff key resembles a half moon shape. You will have to remove the balancer to see what kind of damage there is and go from there.

Need to pull the harmonic balancer,do i need a puller? and what kind do i need?

In order to remove your harmonic balancer, you will need a harmonic balancer puller. Most harmonic balancer pullers work and look the same. For your specific car it doesn't need a specific one. You can go and pick one up at your local auto parts store. You can either buy it or rent it, depending where you go. Hope this helps.
