Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2l cranks but won't start - outdoor temperature dependent.

Cranks but won't catch when outdoor temp is in the mid 50's F, but starts and runs if it warms up into the mid 60's. Fuel pump seems fine, changed fuel filter, pressure seems ok at fuel rail. Disconnected and reconnected battery. Don't know what to look at that could be that affected by temperature.

Check for spark, if no spark, check crank position sensor if spark is weak change coil.

If temperature is involved it has to be something that uses air or measures air.It would have to be a bad sensor...like the mass air sensor or the senors on the side of your Body throttle like the TPS..I bought a new throttle body once with the sensors already on it and my car started right up...It was doing the same thing when it was cold..No issues now. It's best to buy the whole throttle body.It's cheaper

It has spark?

Easy check with starter fluid. Works best if you remove air filter and spray a 1 to 2 second burst down the intake (more is not better).

If it fires up and runs for a couple of seconds, then its a fuel issue. If doesn't run then electrical.

How old is the battery? Older ones can get weaker over the years when they are under strain. Especially on a big V8. Go to a battery specialist and they can test it 'under load' to see if it's strong enough.
When you turn the key does it catch, miss and die or does it just wind? Does it idle roughly once started? Please use the 'Comment' button below with the answers if you can
Try putting a dose of good quality injector cleaner through it. Put the cleaner in and just let the vehicle idle for 10 minutes. That way you get a stronger cleaning mixture going through the injectors.

If the data link is not talking to the computer check your ground at the computer and at the data link connector to see if the computer is even alive ground pin 3 on DLC with the key off then turn key to the run position if it flashes the check engine codes record them, if no engine light, does the engine light come on when you turn the key on then go off? if not, check fuses if not check power for pin on computer, if it has power you have a bad computer. But TEST THE GROUNDS IT IS THE BIGGEST FAILURE For these rigs or any manufacture. check that you have power also at the DLC too. if not you need a digital ohm meter and a subscription to http:///.www.alldatadiy.com and start reading the campaigns on that vechile for computer and trouble tree for dead DLC and computer. I don't have that subscription or I could tell you more where to look, if you need anymore help let me know. Also if the crank sensor could cause it not to run the fuel pump but so can the cam sensor. You need to find out if the computer gets it's pulse for the pump at the computer if it does then you need to test them both. There are three wires a ground a colored power wire and a wire to go to the computer you can test these sensors with a meter to see if there is a pulse to each. sometimes the fuel pump gets it's signal from the coil pack so it's important to have the subscription, you can do a search for each item and test them as needed and has a wiring diagram.

I could be the CKP (crank sensor), but it could also be several other factors including the TPS. The correct way to start a diagnosis would be to see if any trouble codes are stored in memory. I'm assuming all basic ignition components are ok ; spark plugs, etc.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. If you have a vehicle that will turn over and over but will not start, I will tell you some things that you need to check. Every vehicle needs air, fuel, and fire to start. Now, the first thing you want to check is the fuel system. You want to make sure that the engine is getting fuel. The easiest way to test the fuel system is by testing the fuel pressure on the fuel rail. You need to refer to your owner manual for the correct measurement of pressure. Another easy test is using starter fluid. If it starts when you spray the fluid, you have a fuel issue. If it doesn't, check the ignition system. If your pressure is not correct or you have no way of testing the fuel pressure, start by checking your fuel pump. The fuel pump pumps fuel out of the gas tank and to your fuel filter. When you first turn your key on, you should be able to hear the fuel pump kick on for a second or two. It makes a soft buzzing sound. Listen for this sound. This will determine if the pump is kicking on and working. If you don't hear this sound, check your fuel pump fuse, relay, and your reset button. Not all vehicles have a reset button, so once again check to see if you have this button. If you change all of these and the pump still doesn't work, you may have a bad fuel pump. Test and make sure the pump is getting power before you change it. Now, you want to make sure the fuel filter is not stopped up. Check the gas lines and make sure they have no damage. Lastly, make sure fuel is getting to the fuel injectors. If you are getting fuel, you will need to make sure you are getting fire. You need to test your spark plugs or coils for spark. If you have spark, you should look over your timing belt or timing chain to make sure it is not broken or slipping. If you are not getting spark, you will need to check the spark plugs, coils, coil packs, wires, distributor, distributor cap, and rotor. Anyone of these can cause a vehicle to not spark. Check everything you can. Make sure the rotor is spinning and make sure the distributor cap has all metal contacts. Also, make sure the cap is not damaged or cracked. Make sure none of the plug/coil wires are damaged. Make sure they are all hooked up correctly. Now, it is possible that you could have a bad camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor. In some vehicles, the camshaft sensor is built into the distributor. You want to test each of these parts and make sure each one is getting power. If a part is not getting power, that may be the reason your vehicle is not starting. If you have a check engine light on, you need to get your computer scanned for error codes. More then likely, if your vehicle won't start, your check engine light is on. The light is on because your computer has detected a problem with the vehicle. You can buy a cheap code reader for around forty dollars from Autozone or Advanced. Just make sure you know all your codes for your vehicle. When you have it scanned, the computer may know the exact parts you need to change. Most of these parts listed run off your ECM. The ignition system is a very complex system. It is rarely, but they do go bad. If you believe that the computer is to blame, make sure you have it flashed before you put it in your vehicle. If you don't, it will not work. Finding your error codes is the best way to finding your solution. If not, you will have many things to check. Always make sure you run a test on a part before changing it. Make sure that part is getting power. If it is not, check the power source. I know this is a lot of information, but any of the parts listed can cause the vehicle to not start. If you have no access to a code reader, fuel pressure tester, or a code reader, you can still check a lot of things. It is just harder. Remember, always use the process of elimination. Determine if the part is working or not and move on to the next part. You will eventually find your problem. Lastly, electrical problems can cause the symptoms you are having. They are very hard to find. When trying to find an electrical problem, you need to make sure you know what to test for. Each wire has a purpose. One part of the engine can shut down another part. You need to know how many volts you are testing for on each wire. You can use a voltage meter to test for current. I hope this helps you and thank you for reading. Cranks, but won't start


Could be the crank sensor is bad but If the check engine light does NOT come on when cranking at the times when it won't start, then your ECU is in need of repair. The engine will only start after the check engine light comes on and the ecu is what controls that. It's likely going bad, causing the delayed start problem typical of early 90's jeeps. Repair or replacement services for your jeep ECU are available on ebay.

i dont know if this helps, but i know in some models, the security issue is caused by the key itself. if there is an rfid chip in the key and it is not responding to the computer, the motor will not start. try using your VIN to get a new key made at a dealership.

If it was running yesterday and only cranks this morning you need to determine which you are missing - spark or fuel. The spark is easy - pull a plug and let it spark to the frame. while cranking. If you have spark then you have to start checking the fuel system.

More than likely needs a crank sensor, Try cranking with the crank sensor disconnected, you should not get the dashes in the cluster. The crank sensors take out the communication system of the vehicle

Fuel delivery is influenced by engine temperature sensor. (sometimes a seperate unit from gauge sensor). Since you did not mention any performance problems after starting or on hot re-starts, that's where I'd look first!
