Have the top half of engine rebuilt. That depends on the shop doing it. It's a lot of work have to take top half of engine apart. Most likely a moderate amount of time
I'm pretty sure Chrysler never put a 4.0L engine in a PT Cruiser (V6? V8?). And since the valve cover gasket is located between the valve cover and the cylinder head, there is no bolt that holds just the valve cover gasket in place - all the bolts hold the valve cover in place. If there is excess oil around one of those bolts, you have a break in the gasket (or a bad gasket if the gasket is for the bolt only) or the bolts are not tightened to specification.

Hi Barbra:
1) I'd be suspicious of a bad head gasket with a possible leak between a cylinder and the water jacket.
If fumes smell like coolant that would be a confirming hint.
Check the oil (dipstick) and see if it has a milky colour or if there is any water visible. If the head gasket problem is only as in 1) above, it should be just oil.
- Temporary fix attempt????? - add aluminum sealant to coolant.
- Permanaent fix (expensive) - Off to the repair shop for a new head gasket.
Hope this helps.
Sounds like the engine head gasket needs to be replaced. The gasket has deteriated from the engine cylinder and coolant passage and overheating the coolant. Sometimes you will see coolant mixed with engine oil, or milky solution on the oil dipstick
The valve is located just above where the engine and transmission seam meets.
There is the metal exhaust gas tube with 2x8mm bolts and a fiber
gasket. The EGR mounts to the cylinder head with 2 10mm bolts and a
metal gasket. There are 2 vacuum lines that go to the control solenoid,
a black plastic pod moounted under the throttle body. It clips into the
TB mounting bracket, and has a 3rd vacuum supply line and 1 electrical
connector.
Hi I am Vortash the first thing you should check is the fluid level ( water ) in the radiator bottle .. and the oil to see if there is any water in it if you have a heat problem the head gasket can leak allowing water to mix with the oil .. this causes the oil to turn creamy white and reduces it's protection to the engine .
The best thing for you to do is have the vehicle checked over now as if the head cooks you could be looking at a couple of thousand dollars for repair in this country The UK it would cost about a thousand pounds to have a head skimmed and the gaskets replaced due to overheating and at todays currency exchange thats a lot of dollars ..Have a compression test done on the cylinders this will tell you if you have a gasket problem , The readings per cylinder should be between 130 to 150 per cylinder any lower and you have a problem .. regards Vortash
