I had same issue with my 2000 Windstar. Quick fix, just hit the top of the panel hard with your hand. The pointers will get back to its position and normal operation.
However, as you mentioned, this usually happens sometimes with no specific reason. So, as shared by other users, you might want to remove the Cluster and check and clean the connectors, that temporarily worker for me, but after a while, my car started doing this again, but not so ofter at all (2 times a yr for the last 3 yrs). This seems to be a ground issue inside the panel. Don't recomend replacing the alternator or battery $$ just for this issue.
See 'tachometer gage stuck' in case your tacho pointer gets stuck inside the prndl.
Good luck!

Check and make sure the main connector at the back of the instrument cluster is locked into the cluster

How do i fix the dash gages that go wacko from time to time

You may have a short or poor earth connection. However, first check the fuses - clean and refit them.

To find a short or poor earth can take some doing. You'll have to access the circuitry behind the instrument gauges which will mean that you have to remove the instrument cluster and probably part of the dashboard.

Dash lights blinking for no reason, needles on all gages going haywire oh and I recently had the alternator replaced. Ford windstar lx 2003

Most likely you have a bad Regulator inside the Alternator. You should have some type of Warranty on what you bought. You can check the heavy wire in back of the Alternator to see if it is loose and check the plug in for the brushes.

On the opposite end the heavy wire attaches to a terminal, make sure it is tight. You should get another Alternator if checking the connections does not help. But test the newest Alternator before you leave the store and test the one you are replacing to see if it messes up on the bench test.
